Everyone!
If you haven't been following closely lately, you
might have missed out on the two previous
Technical Preview (TP) releases we had for
version 3.
Today we posted our third weekly version 3 TP release,
and it's only getting better and better:
So - what's new?
* Version 3 has seen a major facelift, making it look better than ever. The way our issue tracker looks and works has always been our trademark, but we've raised the bar even further with version 3.
* Lots and lots of new features:
- Project context. The Bug Genie is now project-aware. Instead of just being able to track issues for different projects, which we've always provided, each project now has their own area in the tracker. However, we've still tried to keep the global areas "global".
- Issue types linked to issue fields. You can now define what issue fields are visible and/or editable per issue type. This is also extended so you can make some issue types automatically redirect to the reported issue, and some issue types reload the "report issue" page after the issue has been created. (This feature has been turned on for the new "user story" issue type.) You can also make some fields required, and also put some fields in the new "additional fields" area available at the bottom of the report page. Everything is customizable!
- Immediate issue reporting. Gone are the days of required components, "builds", edition, category and severity. When a new project has been created, you can now immediately start tracking issues, without having to add editions, builds, components and whatnots.
- Pending changes. You can now work on different parts of the issue without committing all your changes. Change time spent, priority and category, and when you're done, hit the "save changes" button on the issue and all your changes are saved (the fields mentioned are only examples). The Bug Genie also does conflict tracking if more people are editing the same issue - changes will be merged if you're not editing the same fields, and will warn you if you are changing the same part of an issue. You can also work on several issues at once without even saving any of them - your changes are only visible to others after you save them.
- Developer / user Dashboard. Users now get their own dashboard, which shows them things like messaging inbox summary, calendar overview, project information, upcoming milestones, issues with unsaved changes, assigned issues, timeline, and more
- More project features. The introduction of the project context allowed us to add more project-specific features. Projects now have their own dashboard summary page, separate "find issues" section, timeline, scrum management section, wiki, timeline and more.
- Wiki. The Bug Genie version 3 comes with a built-in wiki. If you haven't been using a wiki before, now's the time to start. We're trying to stay syntax compatible with mediawiki (wikipedia), and also provide many of the often used features of wikipedia. Features already implemented includes automatic TOC, preview, categories, "what links here", camel casing link detection, and much more.
- Project wiki. The wiki is also project-aware and lets you built project-specific wiki-pages, categories and more. You can also cross-link between project wiki pages, and the main wiki, seamlessly.
- Wiki formatting everywhere. With the built-in wiki also comes built-in wiki formatting, which is now used everywhere. We've kept our existing smart-parsing features such as linking to issue by just writing the issue number, and will add more smart-parsing features as we go along.
- Time tracking. Track time spent on issues, using the new "start working on issue" and "done working on issue" actions.
- Smart estimation
- More options when closing issues. Change status, resolution and add a comment when closing issues. If you want to, of course.
- Advanced search with grouping, pagination and saving capabilities.
- Gravatar support
- Postgres support. You can now install and use The Bug Genie with a Postgres database backend.
- Custom fields. A feature that has been requested for a long time, and by many users. Custom fields are first class citizens, which means they blend in and you can edit them as "normal" fields, use them for search filters and during issue reporting.
- Fully editable issue fields. Configurable status, category, priority, reproducability, etc.
- Configurable fields visibility. From the issue type configuration page you can now specify which fields are visible, reportable (main area or as an additional field) and required.
- Permissions configuration. You can now manage permissions for all groups and teams using the new "Permissions" configuration section
- Configurable fields access. You can set permissions for all fields, as well as all values for most fields
- More documentation in the wiki. We've added more documentation to the internal wiki in The Bug Genie to make it easier for you to get started using it
- RSS feeds. You can now subscribe to updates from project timelines and predefined searches using RSS 2.0. More feed locations will be added.
* The translation system used in the framework has also seen a significant update. In addition to simplifying the file-structure, we've also added the possibility for translators to provide completely translated templates. This also applies to the help-section.
We're also trying to work more closely with our translators to provide better translations and to make sure they're kept up-to-date.
* We've moved from a more procedural framework to a completely redesigned, MVC-compatible framework. The v2 framework has its strong points, but we've kept all of them and still managed to improve in version 3. Inspired heavily by the Symfony PHP framework, The Bug Genie version 3 framework has allowed us to spend a lot more of our time actually developing and improving features, instead of reproducing code.
The plugin/module subsystem in the framework has also been improved and partly rewritten. Any plugins made for version 2 will be incompatible with version 3 - however, the way the current module/plugin system works will give plugin/module developers a lot more power.
The shift to an MVC framework also triggered another change in the framework - readable, rewritten URLs. In version 2, we used URLs such as "viewissue.php?issue_no=123" - you won't see this in version 3. We're now using URLs in the same style as other web-based systems, "/projectname/issue/123".
We're still mapping out the complete list of planned features, but some of the ones already decided upon are:
- OpenID authentication support (use your google, blog, yahoo account and more as logins)
- Reintroduce PC profile support from version 1
- Editable saved searches
- Incoming email support for creating, updating and commenting on tickets
The technology preview release can be downloaded from our webpage, http://www.thebuggenie.com
PS:
Version 3 is scheduled for release in January, but the deadline may be moved. Please forward all your comments and suggestions to The Bug Genie development team using the online feedback form, the mailing lists or in the forums.

Daniel André Eikeland and the rest of The Bug Genie team

Everyone! The wait is almost over, we're almost there. Later tonight, the first BUGS 2 Release Candidate will be released - and boy, do we have something for everyone... Since the last release in the 1.x series, we've been hard at work creating the ultimate follow-up to one of the easiest issue trackers around, and we are very proud of what we've accomplished. Not withholding anything, here is the short list of improvements since BUGS 1.9 (there are more, but we simply cannot list them all): * Better user management with groups and teams * More refined access control * Powerful and advanced search functionality * Source code control integration * Articles, news and billboards * Calendars with events, meetings and todo's * Project dashboard with live statistics and overview * Automatic roadmap generation * Issue sub-tasks which can be promoted to individual issues * Relating issues * Voting * OpenSearch integration * Much improved i18n support with more languages available by default * Modular architecture, making it easy to extend and build upon it * A beautiful new graphical theme These are just *some* of the highlights! We invite you all to download and try out this release later tonight, when it is released. A special "thank you" goes to Michael Gatta for his work on the great new logo we are using (which also inspired the release name). I'd also like to thank our translation team for providing some great translations and for helping us iron out the remaining issue in the i18n support. Remember to report any issues that you find with this release in our online issue tracker at http://b2.thebuggenie.com - the BUGS team |

Everyone! Tonight we released our latest and final beta version - codenamed "Yasmine". This is the final beta release in the BUGS 2.0 schedule, and brings the last round of polish, update and features. The release was unfortunately delayed by several weeks because of rewrites in major parts of the system, but fear not - we've completed it! Long story short - download it here: https://sourceforge.net/project/platformdownload.php?group_id=89533 So what does this release bring? What has happened since the last release? * Better module management We have made some huge improvements to the module configuration section. You can now write your own modules, then install/uninstall and configure them directly from the module configuration interface. * Big improvements in the BUGS 2 architecture We have made some big improvements in the underlying BUGS 2 architecture, introducing a trigger system which will make writing modules easier. We had something in place for that earlier, but it wasn't as elegant as we'd like. More documentation on this is coming, but this forced us to move a lot of the module stuff to the new architecture. This was the number one reason we had to delay the beta 4 release. * New themes Eye-candy is always nice, and sometimes it brings a bit of "freshness". The new default icon theme in BUGS 2 has a more "polished" look than the one we are currently using. The new default theme is using icons from the Oxygen icon set, primarily known from KDE 4. * More help We have moved the help files out into the translated folders, which makes all the help sections translatable. We haven't finished all the help sections yet, but they will come with the release of the RCs. * Importing data from BUGS 1.9 You can now import data from your existing BUGS 1.9 installation (1.9 is the only supported version for importing). This should be done immediately after installing BUGS 2, if you want to import, since it will automatically overwrite existing products, users and issues. If you need this feature - please test it and report back bugs! * The usual round of bug- and security fixes The last beta release was far from bug-free, and even a major bug in the installer got through into the beta release. We think we've managed to find all the showstopper bugs for this beta release, so it should install and behave properly. Of course - bugs may still exist, but it should take more effort to find them this time. As you can see, it's a long list, and it took much longer to get this beta release out the door than we wanted. Our online bug-tracker is currently offline for maintenance, as we will be upgrading it to beta 4 later tonight. Unfortunately, we cannot migrate the data we had in beta 3 so far over to this beta, which means that you will have to re-register if you previously registered with our online bug tracker. We apoligise for the inconvenience. Please test this release thoroughly - no reported bugs means that this will be the Release Candidate. b2.thebuggenie.com On behalf of the BUGS team, Daniel André Eikeland http://www.thebuggenie.com |

Everyone! As some of you may have noticed, beta 4 has been delayed. This has been caused by a lot of things, but mainly lack of time to finish the planned features. We will do a new beta release within a day or two which fixes the main issues from beta 3, that many of you have reported, such as B2-113 and not being able to continue from step 3 in the "report issue" wizard. If we're lucky, we'll be able to finish the upgrade functionality in this release - if not, we'll release it without. The only main functionality that is left is the upgrade functionality, every other planned feature is in place (or just getting final finishing touches). I'm apologize to all of you who have been waiting for this release - more information about what's in the next beta release is coming :) -Daniel André |

Everyone! We're well on track with the beta 4 release early next week. This week saw a boost in functionality, such as: * New module management interface in the configuration center, with support for installing and uninstalling modules. * Updated command line client * Command line installation * Improved product dashboard * Several enhancements and fixes in the publish module, which should make using articles easier and more intuitive The last functionality for this beta is the upgrade functionality from the 1.9 version, which we have already started. If you want to help us test out this functionality, please let us know. We need testers for this, otherwise we might break stuff. Let us know! There you go, that's this weeks report. Translators! So - this latest beta release has translation support! BUGS' translation support differs a lot from the one in BUGS 1. We will not focus on how we did it in BUGS 1 in this email - just know that if you was one of the translators for BUGS 1, you should read carefully. BUGS 2 offers you to places to change your language: * During the installation, and * through the configuration interface. The installation script has a hard-coded list of languages. If you are able to translate BUGS 2 into your language, then please send us the language files - we will be more than happy to include your translation as an available option during the installation! However, please coordinate your efforts with us, as there might be someone else doing the same translation. The configuration center reads a list of available languages from the i18n/ folder under the bugs2 folder. If you look at the default installation, there is a folder named "en_US" in there. If you want to translate BUGS 2 into your own language, you should start by making a copy of that folder, place it in the i18n/ folder, and name it according to your language code. BUGS 2 will then give you that new language as an option in the Configuration Center -> General settings. You can select your new language from the configuration interface even if you haven't translated one string yet. BUGS will locate the translated strings as you create them, and just default to the English text in the meantime. You need to keep all the files in that directory, so it is possible to load only the parts of the translation that is needed. This is done to reduce overhead. To translate BUGS 2 into your own language, translate the strings in those files, and BUGS will figure out the rest on its own. The strings typically look like this: $string['Welcome, %username%! Today is %day%'] = 'Welcome, %username%! Today is %day%'; How do you translate this? Translate *only* the left part of the string - the one that is *not* inside brackets -> ['....'] . Do *not* translate any words or phrases inside percentage signs. In the example above, that means you should translate everything but the word/phrase '%username%' and '%day%'. These are keywords that BUGS will substitute with the proper value where needed. Also, please note that you can enable logging to track down any issues, by turning it on in the "include/classes/BUGSlogging.class.php"-file, which should be pretty self explanatory. If you have any questions, feel free to send them to me. Regards, Daniel André Eikeland http://www.thebuggenie.net/ |

Everyone! Available immediately, we're happy to announce the third beta version of BUGS 2 - codenamed "Corundum"! This third beta contains all the modules which will be available upon release, as well as language support and general improvements. - What's new in this release? There are several things that have been added and improved in this release. In addition to fixing 24 new issues since beta 2, these are the highlights of the beta 3 release: * Added: Calendar module * Added: SVN Integration module * Added: Language / translation support * Updated: Search module is now a lot quicker * Updated: BUGS 2 core functionality - Release notes This release has focused on getting the translation support ready, as well as completing the remaining modules. We have completed and added two new modules - Calendar and SVN integration - which will be part of the BUGS 2.0 release. - Installation instructions The beta release can be downloaded by following the link posted at http://www.thebuggenie.net/ , or by visiting our sourceforge.net project page - http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/bugs-bug-genie . Extract the beta 3 archive into a folder under your web server, then point your web browser to it, and follow the on-screen instructions. - Upgrade instructions This release does not contain any upgrade functionality. If you have been using a previous version of BUGS, such as BUGS 1 or any of the BUGS 2 betas, you need to install this release from scratch. - What's next? In the last beta release, we will finish the command line client, as well as the upgrade scripts for migrating from BUGS 1 to BUGS 2. It will not be possible to upgrade from any BUGS 2 beta releae to BUGS 2.0, only upgrades from the latest BUGS 1.x version will be supported. If you want to help us with this functionality, please drop me a message, and I'll get in touch with you. We need real people with real BUGS 1.9 installations to test the upgrade functionality, if we want the upgrade functionality to work properly. Any and all bugs and issues with this release can be reported in our issue tracker. Please report them if you find any. IMPORTANT! This release is beta quality, and as such is not recommended for production use. Things may break, and we do not provide support for this version. |

Everyone! Tomorrow, we're releasing BUGS 2 beta 3 - codenamed "Corundum". In addition to making sure that everything we promised for this release is available, we've also been hard at work trying to fix a bunch of issues reported since our previous beta release - "Blue Topaz" - and we have succeeded far beyond our expectations. So, what can you expect from this release? Here are the highlights: * All modules are now feature complete * Translation support is done, and both the B2 core and all modules have been translated (see the i18n/ folder for translations) * Calendar module is included * SVN Integration module is included * Search speed has been dramatically improved * The BUGS 2 core has been improved in several key areas, seeing speed improvements all over * Most pages validate (http://validator.w3.org/) * 23 reported issues fixed since beta 2, as well as several unreported issues That's impressive - but there is more coming! We have one more beta version to release before we're issuing our first Release Candidate. What's coming in the next beta version? Since the upgrade functionality from BUGS 1 is one of the most important areas for many of you, we will focus heavily on upgrading from BUGS 1 in our next beta release. This release will also see the completion of the command line client, which makes it possible to both install BUGS 2 and perform basic tasks from the command line. This should make managing BUGS 2 installations much easier for server admins. If you are currently using BUGS 1, and want to make sure that it is possible to upgrade to BUGS 2, please send me an email if you want to be a part of the beta testing team for this functionality. We cannot make this functionality work perfectly without your help, so please use this opportunity to get your voice heard! If you want to help us translate BUGS 2 into your language, and have your translation included when we release, please drop me an email so I can add you to our list of translators. Everyone! If you think there are many words and phrases in a big projects such as BUGS 2, then you are correct! The initial translation support has been started this weekend, and we are already well underway translating BUGS 2. Unless someone is generous enough to provide us with a translation during the RC (release candidate) period, we will ship with an English and Norwegian translation when BUGS 2 launches. After the 2.0 feature freeze this week, a lot of stuff has changed in the codebase, as well as some module features being added. With the help of a software consultant from the UK, we have identified and fixed several glaring accessibility issues, as well as greatly improved our standards compliance. We're not there yet, but getting there. If you want to help us improve further - until the next beta has been released - please download the latest SVN version and send us an email if you see something. The calendar module has also been finalized this week, and is looking great. If you thought you wouldn't be using BUGS 2, consider doing so just for the calendar! In other news, we have been added several features that has been requested, that are not "big" features, but rather enhancements in the funtionality, but which was requested before this week. As you all know, the feature freeze is in effect, so any new features accepted will go into 2.1. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Back to coding! -Daniel André Eikeland http://www.thebuggenie.com/ |

Hi, everyone! The response to the last two betas have been quite overwhelming, and we are still planning to release more test versions before the final 2.0 version. One of our main highlights in Beta 3 is the feature freeze for version 2.0. This means that within August 15th, no new features will be accepted for this version. If you have any wishes, please report them online, or send me an email before this date. Features accepted after this date will be for our next point release - 2.1. BUGS 2 is shaping up to be better than ever - if you haven't yet tried our latest beta, please do! Anyhow, our current release "schedule" is as follows: Beta 3 - (August): * Feature freeze * Calendar, SVN Integration modules finished (feature ready, not bug free ;) ) * E-mail notifications + e-mail replies modules ready * Translation/Localization support Beta 4 (September): * Stabilizing modules + core * Public release of B2DB, our PHP DB ORM Release Candidate 1 (unknown release date): * Fixing bugs reported since Beta 4 * Feature complete, hopefully ready to release without major changes Thank you for reading this newsletter. Best wishes, Daniel Andre Eikeland Project manager, zegenie Studios http://www.thebuggenie.com/ |

Everyone! Available immediately, we're happy to release the second BUGS 2 beta, codenamed "Blue topaz". In this beta we focused on getting the "News and Articles" module ready, as well as make some rather big under-the-hood improvements in the "Report issue"-wizard. We also closed 24 bugs since the release of BUGS 2 beta 1. These are the highlights from the changes available since beta 1: * Added: publish module, which adds several features * Added: News items * Added: Articles * Added: Billboards * Changed: "Report issue" wizard is now using AJAX instead of 10 page refreshes to report a bug. This should make the process a lot less cumbersome, an quicker * Added: "Report issue" - option to "submit issue, and continue reporting a similar issue" * Fixed: issues with installation and directory permissions Please help us test this release by following the download instructions posted at http://www.thebuggenie.com *Please note* There *are* and *will be* several issues with this release, therefore the "beta" status. We do not recommend this release for production use. The "SVN Integration" and "Calendar" modules are not finished yet, but will be available in beta 3. Beta 3 will also have translation capabilities, so you can start translation BUGS 2 into your own language. After Beta 3 we will enter "feature freeze", which means we will not add more features to BUGS 2.0 (any features accepted after the release of beta 3 will be slated for the 2.1 release), only fix issues, add polish and complete the translation. *How to install this release* Download and extract the beta2 archive to a chosen directory under your web-server, then access this directory through your web-browser. - Daniel Andre Eikeland Project Manager, zegenie Studios http://www.zegeniestudios.net |

Hello, everyone! We are happy to announce that we have tagged, and are releasing our first beta version of BUGS 2, codenamed "Elyndir". This release focuses on showing you the stuff that has happened with BUGS since we started, and should give you a good impression of where we are headed. We've polished and made the following modules installable in this release: * Search * Messaging * Mail notification (The "Publish", "SVN integration" and "Calendar" modules are not finished and will be released together with an upcoming beta version at a later stage.) What else is in this beta release? * B2DB - our new database framework, which will make BUGS 2 database engine independant. Currently supports MySQL. * BUGS 2, feature complete with module support. * Search, messaging and email functionality greatly enhanced since BUGS 1. * Group, team and user permissions, allowing for full detail access control * Integrated online help system Please download and help us test this beta release. Downloads are available from our sourceforge.net website, as well as http://www.thebuggenie.com. There *will* be, and *are* several open issues with this release, but we think we've reached a point where it is mature enough to release a beta version. *INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS* Download, extract to a folder under your web server directory, and access it through a web browser. - Daniel Andre Eikeland Project Manager, zegenie Studios http://www.zegeniestudios.net |

Everyone! The live demo of our upcoming BUGS 2 version has now been updated to the latest revision from SVN. We are doing this instead of releasing an alpha version, because we want to reach a broader audience. If you want to see what's been happening with B2 development, have a look at http://b2.thebuggenie.com/ Some highlights from this update: * Almost completed moving to new DBObject model DBObject is the BUGS 2 database translation layer, which will be present in BUGS 2 when released. This makes BUGS 2 database independant, and will allow us to write database translation layers for other database engines than MySQL (which is the default in BUGS) * "AJAXified" interface We're not sure if this is a word, but if it isn't - it should be. We're making a lot of changes in the interface, so that you can easily navigate, update information on issues, and do normal tasks with AJAX. AJAX (or XMLHTTPRequest) is the technology behind what many call "Web 2.0", which makes webpages much more interactive than before. Some places you can see this in action in the tech demo are: Account management (My account -> view details), user dropdown menus (when logged in) and the Quick search box. For privileged users, issue editing is now completely done with AJAX, so you can do everything without virtually any delay * OpenSearch support BUGS 2 now comes with OpenSearch support. This means you can add BUGS 2 as a search engine in Firefox, IE and other applications that supports the OpenSearch standard. You can try this with the live demo site as well * Full profile support The user profile is now fully functional, and allows you to update your information as you should * Product overview We have cleaned up, and fixed the product overview. This is a nice overview for a product, which gives you important information. The product overview is available from the frontpage * Product roadmap BUGS 2 automatically creates a roadmap for you, if you have defined milestones with attached issues. The roadmap is also available from the frontpage These are just some of the highlights. Other highlights includes a much better configuration center (which is obviously not available in the tech demo) based on AJAX, and much of the configuration code is now complete, as well as many, many, many internal changes. If you try the tech demo, please let us know if you would like the "report an issue" function to be AJAX as well. This is something we're still discussing ... Also, feel free to let us know if you have any other ideas. Cheers! (PS: If you want to test out BUGS 2 for yourself, feel free to download it from sourceforge.net's SVN-repository. More information about this can be found at the sourceforge.net webpage.) -- - Daniel Andre Eikeland Project Leader, zegenie Studios http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ |
