No

I have tried using the Java startup for installing the following products
* BT747 Desktop
* BT747 Desktop Latest
* BT747 Desktop RXTX2.2
for use with my Holux M1200-E, for which i have until now used the Holux ezTour application, but got the advice to try out BT747 instead as it had more possibiklities for configuring my device.
The installation appear to proceed alright in all cases. Java stratup is launced, the application is downloaded and a program shortcut is placed on my desktop.

After download I am asked if I want to download an update. I have tried to proceed from here by answering both no and yes, but the end result is the same.

However, when i try to run the application I get a dialog box

Application Error - unable to launch the application

without any further details apparently available.

I have then tried downloading the ver. 2.0.1 zip file from sourceforge, and unpacked it in C:\BT474_ver_7_4_7

I have then tried lauching the program by running run_j2se.bat

For a very short while a terminal window is opened, but it closes so fast that i do not see anything on the screen. Then nothing happens.

I then noticed an exe file in the same folder called BT747.exe, and I have tried launcing that one. If I have a look in the task manager I see for 1-2 secons the process starting up, using 22 MB of memory and then it silently terminates again.

My OS is windows XP, SP3, 32 bits

I have Java 6, update 20 installed

    This is pretty strange - we'll try to discover what happens...

    Concerning webstart (.jnlp):

    You can start 'javaws -viewer' from the run function in the startup menu of windows (Windows Key + R).

    That will open the configuration panel of java and on top of that the application cache - erase all references to BT747 there. A first issue there seems to be that the application cache got corrupted.

    Close the cache viewer, leaving you with the java configuration console.
    In there, go to 'Advanced' and then 'Java Console'. You should activate the console.
    Under debug you can activate more things, but that may just initially clutter the output too much.

    On the command line.
    1. RUN_J2SE.BAT

    run it as:
    RUN_J2SE.BAT debug

    You'll get information on the console that hopefully indicates a but.
    You should be able to redirect that to a file:
    RUN_J2SE.BAT debug > debug.txt

    2. BT747.EXE

    This is an executeable wrapper handling the call of java itself. The advantage is that it shows as an icon on the desktop, ... .

    3. BT747cmd.EXE

    Similar to BT747.EXE, but the console information goes to CLI console, so more debug information.
    Check if it start normally first (it will launch the GUI).
    Then check using an option:
    BT747cmd -h

    Then try a download:
    BT747cmd -p USB -a (I have a 64 java version, so the display is slightly different - in this example there was an issue during the transfer hence the expected/got messages with the download continuing normally afterwards once this issue has been 'recovered' from ):
    $ ./BT747cmd_64b.exe -a -p COM3
    BT747 Cmd V2.X.1889M build BT747_mdeweerd.1889M.20110316100549018 GPL V3 LICENSE

    I also tried to do run_j2se.bat debug > debug.txt
    I get a cmd window exception error stacktrace like this

    Hi

    From what I see, what I think are the possible causes of the issue:
    - A (java) security setting is preventing certain resources to be loaded. This can be checked int he java configuration console (javaws -viewer ...).
    However when it is security, there are normally security exceptions, which is not the case.
    - Your java installation is corrupt. I do not like giving this kind of advice, but remove java from your system and install a new version.

    It looks like the errors happen when the application icons and such are being loaded - even the GEOID binary load which is in the resources fails.

    Noticing the awt exceptions, I may have some related useful information:

    Prior to reinstalling the desktop verions using java Webstart I have uninstalled the three ddesktop versions using Control Panel - Add/Remove software.

    On uninstalling one of the desktop versions I got the error message:
    bin\awt.dll: Old File Not Found.
    However a file of the same name was found. No update since file contents do not match.

    The uninstall finished by telling me it was "unsuccesful", yet the program was removed from my list of installed programs.

    I got the same thought as you: that maybe something has gone haywire with my Java 6 SRE. Ill try to remove -> reinstall

    awt.dll is not part of BT747, it is part of java.
    That is a "strong" indication that you should reinstall java.

    AWT concerns the java windowing system so if that is missing, no wonder nothing can be shown.

    I removed 6 earlier Java Updates SREs and a single SDK (time for some spring cleaning) and now I have installed Java & update 24.

    The Java web start can start the desktop BT747. I do get a geoid exception though in the Java console window, but maybe it is not important?

    I can connect to the Holux M1200-E, and I am thrilled to get started with it.

    Sorry to have wasted your time on what was really a Java installation issue - it was just not very apparent from the initials symptoms. I guess this non-bug can be closed safely now.

    Best wishes,
    Kim from Denmark

    Well it is working now, and maybe somebody else will benefit form this analysis too.

    I'll look at the GEOID thing at a later time. It is not critical, but should not be the case and may be due to a misspecification in the build system.
