First, edit the Makefile in lua-5.1.2 so that the PLAT variable
is right for your platform.  It might be already.

Then do configure [--prefix=...]

Then do make.

Then do make install (optional).

You need to set the BRUTE environment variable to be the place
where atomic data, default configuration scripts, and so on, 
live.
