Category: Geometry Editing Group: crash or data loss Status: Open >Resolution: Accepted Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Mike Feher (zerex71) Assigned to: Sean Morrison (brlcad) Summary: clone command not working Initial Comment: I am a relative novice with BRL-CAD/MGED (one year-plus) and am having the following issues with the clone command on the WinXP platform: 1. I have a primitive that is clearly in my database, but when I try to do the clone command on it: clone bsm.s -or- clone -a 3 1 0 0 bsm.s (bsm.s is a simple rcc and is listed when I do the tops command0 I get the following error: db_read(C:/Program Files/BRL-CAD/bin/STS.g) ERROR offset=1880, count=20480, dbi_eof=2040 ERROR: clone internal error, cannot find bsm.s for editing Database read error, aborting 2. clone is not listed in the MGED documentation (clickable commands in HTML) 3. I had a program crash and exit when attempting a clone command yesterday on the same primitive ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Sean Morrison (brlcad) Date: 2007-05-24 19:08 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=785737 Originator: NO Ah, that's rather surprising -- and the first I've heard/seen of the pattern tool not working. What version are you running on Windows? It looks like the pattern tool is probably missing a resource file it needs. That seems to be a separate bug altogether, but I've made a note and am looking into the problem. Issues with the Windows platform port, however, due unfortunately languish due to a lack of involved Windows developers. Nobody has stepped forward to help resolve some of those problems, so they get passively fixed. As for the tutorial volume I referred to, it was actually vol III -- and all of the tutorial series volumes are available directly on the main website -- http://brlcad.org -- where the book is listed as "Principles of Effective Modeling ( PDF )". Sean p.s. Marking it Accepted means it is accepted that this is a bug, Rejected would imply this is not a bug. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Mike Feher (zerex71) Date: 2007-05-24 18:42 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1800822 Originator: YES I tried using the "Build Pattern Tool" under the tools menu and I got an erro as shown in the attached screen shot. Also, I am not sure what or where the "tutorial series volume IV" is. File Added: MGED Pattern Tool Error.gif ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Sean Morrison (brlcad) Date: 2007-05-24 17:26 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=785737 Originator: NO Alas, clone's availability on the command line in mged is premature as that particular command is only functional on older v4 format brl-cad geometry database files. It's not been fully ported/updated to the new format, so it basically "doens't work" yet (which is why it's not in the documentation). Clone should be finished soon, within a couple releases, but it's been delayed by other developments recently. In the meantime, the pattern tool (on the Tools menu) can do pretty much everything clone does just via a different interface. Usage of the pattern tool is covered in the tutorial series, volume IV. Hope that helps some, and we'll be sure to announce clone command availability when it's ready. Cheers!
