There's a new (open source / free) book available called The Architecture of Open Source Applications. It gives an overview of about two dozen different open source projects, some large and notable, some small:
They show how their software is structured, how data and workflows are organized, and more. It's pretty interesting stuff for any developer, but some interesting insights in particular for new developers to see how a wide variety of other projects do what they do. Might even give you insight on why some things are structured the way they are in BRL-CAD (or give ideas for making improvements) too. ;-)
