I'm running the latest pre-release of 0.50.0 and I thought I'd get my feet with with FM synthesis.
But anyway, the -dx option doesn't make any sound for me.
I cannot reproduce this, it works here. There are a couple of possibilities. Firstly, there were issues with the DX that I thought were resolved where it would just go and eat 100% CPU or at least a large enough amount to give you a lot of overruns and very little/no sound. Secondly, if you have not done a lot of work changing the DX memories then try the following:
This will remove any files you might have saved that now fail. If you don't want to remove them, then just move them to somewhere else.

Ah, that is an interesting comment, this is not 'your bad' - I have a strange feeling that I may not deliver a 'default' memory for the DX after some issues I had a few months ago, let me have a look at that. If I don't deliver a base memory and you don't have one from a previous 'save' operation then it also would not work with exactly the symptoms you describe.
Confirmed - this is my issue, I need to deliver a memory number '0' which is the default load. If none exists then all controllers default to '0' and you get no sound, not a good idea.
This is a bug.
This should now work. If not, try loading memory #1 then saving it as memory #0 - it's possible that your memory #0 is empty.

Release 0.50.2 will ship with a dx0.mem, the default load, plus some changes to force loading of initial memory.
