#7 Configure using sh instead of bash

The configure script uses /bin/bash, rather than the
standard /bin/sh to work. Many non-GNU systems, like
FreeBSD, don't install bash by default, preferring csh as
the standard shell. This patch removes the dependency
on bash.

Instead of using an array of possible search paths for
the cross-compiler (not sh compatible), a list is used.
This allows the later while loops to be replaced with for
loops, which are what the comments indicate they
should be anyway.

I also fix a typo and 'test' syntax
