&lt;p&gt;Microsoft Visual C++ Express is free for 30 days then you need to register to get a key to continue using it - this too is free. To register:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Select Help =&amp;gt; Register Product &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition Product Registration window appears. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Click Register Now &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Web browser opens. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Enter your Windows Live ID/Passport username/e-mail and password. &lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;If you do not have one then you can sign up. This is free. They are similar to Google accounts. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Complete registration form &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Wait for a confirmation e-mail &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Click the link in the e-mail &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Web browser opens with your registration key e.g. XXXXXX &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;In Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition Product Registration, enter your registration key &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Click Complete Registration &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Click OK &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Check that it's registered: &lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Select Help =&amp;gt; Register Product &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;You should get a pop up saying This product has already been registered &lt;/li&gt;
