2007 March Madness Notes

I've found that the new start time logic for tournaments can be a little flaky, depending on which MySQL version you use. Older versions of MySQL seem to have problems, but newer ones don't. I could get pools to close properly if I run a SQL statement updating the tournament start time to the current_date, then restarting the server. I've also had problems with some older tournaments not having a valid start date in the database. Whenever I then tried to view those tournaments I'd get an exception. The same fix works for this problem too.... read more

Tournament Pool & Bracket Tracker v0.4.0 Released

Ready for March Madness!

The Tournament Pool & Bracket Tracker is a J2EE application for easily administrating a sports tournament office pool. The main focus of this release is administration. Administrators can now create a new tournament, create teams and assign the seeds all from the user interface. This release makes irrelevant whether or not I release .sql files on the night that the brackets are revealed, because anyone can set it up. This release also adds the notion of a 'League' so that teams are properly grouped and you don't make the mistake of women's team in a men's tournament or
vice versa. Also added was the notion of a site
administrator. This is automatically the first person to register on the site. This person has the authority to create new tournaments, set them up with teams, and to assign other site admins.... read more

v0.2.2 build problem

There is a problem with the v0.2.2 build. In Tournament/Web Content/WEB-INF/lib/ the file webutility.jar is out of date. It does not include the StringUtil file. This results in errors on when submitting the registration page. To fix it, just create a new webutility.jar file from the Web Utility project and put it in the WEB-INF/lib directory when you deploy.

You can also grab the updated jar file from CVS.

Tournament Pool & Bracket Tracker v0.2.1 released

The major reason for this release is to fix a few bugs that have popped up in v0.2.0, which would prevent you from running a successful pool. However, thanks to Bill Phillips, we also have a new, cleaner user interface!

Tournament Pool & Bracket Tracker v0.2 (NCAA 2005) released

The Tournament Pool & Bracket Tracker is a J2EE application for easily administrating a sports tournament office pool. This release is ready for use with the 2005 NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments, which begin on Thursday. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=133182&package_id=146759&release_id=312157

This application supports small groups or organizations who wish to provide an NCAA basketball tournament pool without a lot of administrative work in calculating up-to-date results and possibilities. Though it was built with the NCAA tournament in mind, it is built generically and should be able to handle most other sports tournament pools For instance, it has been demonstrated to work with the ACC tournament. It is web-based and thus users can register themselves and start enterring their brackets on their own. They can edit and change and play with their selections in an easy to use interface, until they are either happy or run out of time. After the adminstrator of a group adds them to the group and provides at least one pool, the user can submit their finished bracket. Once the tournament begins, they cannot change it. Users can submit a single bracket in as many pools as they want or switch them up. Once the tournament is underway, as games complete, users can keep track of their progress as the administrator for a tournament updates the results of games. The pool adminstrators can choose from many different scoring systems, and in the future may be able to define their own.... read more
