Probably useful when you alternate two ethernet cards during setup
experiments?

For example, I have Abit IT7 MAX2 with RTL on-board (and do not want
to use it in final setup as I am suspicious about RTL quality) and
3c905C-TX in PCI slot. I happened to use both in debug stage and I
could use the above mentioned feature to avoid some editing.
