Hmm.. we are booting clusters full of 2466N's and we don't see the same problem
that you do, the only problem in booting we have seen is that a non-SMP athlon 
kernel will NOT work on an SMP machine it just pukes with APIC errors.. is it
possible that you have set console to serial ?
