#48 channel list doesn't show any channels

the channel list should show the channels as it gets the list,
and allow the user to join them. otherwise, if there are a lot
of channels on a server (and there usually are) you just kind
of sit there staring at the little count box in the corner.
there's no way to stop it without losing the list you have so
far.
