This is finished now and the changes are in CVS.
To summarize: whenever any of the eight windows for editing sound-objects
or their many parameters is the active (frontmost) window, then the 'Play
selection' menu item will change to 'Play sound-object'. The menu command
or Command-P can then be used to play the current sound-object. (If there
are no sound-objects, then the menu still changes but the command is
disabled).
The 'Play selection' button in the Control Panel is not affected by any of
this.
(The old keyboard shortcuts Cmd-space and Cmd-option-space will continue to
work on OS 9 and earlier).
