Thanks for checking that it compiles for someone other than me!  The
warnings are expected.  The debug target gives a couple thousand of them :)
Someday, when I have nothing better to do, I will work on reducing the
number of warnings ...

Fantastique!  It seems the Intel half is working better than I expected.

Thanks for trying to run the script.  The duplicate open file dialog is a
bug that I also see.

Right.  The purpose of 'check script' is to verify the syntax of the script
and to verify the locations of any files that the script will need to load.
Whenever a BP2 script is moved to a new computer, the locations of the
dependent files will be different.  All of the files that this script asks
for are somewhere in the "data" directory.

I suggest that you don't worry about running the checkall script.  It takes
a _very_ long time (20-30 min) and makes a lot of strange noises ;-)  I'm
sure that Bernard will run it on an Intel machine when he has a chance.

Ah yes, I still have not done anything about this.  Since you are the second
person to complain about BP2 causing excessive fan activity, I think that I
should probably try to resolve the excessive CPU use problem.  (My fans
don't go crazy here even though I am using a PowerMac G4 "windtunnel"
machine).  I know what causes BP2 to use nearly all of the CPU time, and
there are two possible remedies:  a) a simple patch that still uses
"ancient" Mac Toolbox calls to get user events but may reduce the CPU usage
somewhat, or if that is not enough, b) a complete rewrite and modernization
of BP2's event handling code.  The latter would be a good idea anyways, but
would be time consuming, so I will try the easy option first.

one question out of curiousity: in the file open dialogue for scripts  
I can choose among filters for different file types. There I see PLT  
scheme and *SC3* text-file. What does SC3 stand for? It couldn't mean  
SuperCollider3, could it?

the new UB starts up well now and I can compile the project without  
error (426 warnings, the resulting "release" file has exactly the same  
size as the one you posted).

I can playback the -gr.Mozart with simple Synth.

I was not able to run the checkall script, but that may well be due to  
my ignorance. I tried to "load" the script-file. *After* the script  
was loaded (the text appeared in the windows) a second 'open-file'- 
dialogue would pop up. If I cancel that and press 'check script'  
another dialogue pops up asking for a file I am not able to identify.  
There is an apparently newly generated file in the same folder I  
loaded the checkall-script from. That's the only file that dialogue  
allows to open - so I open it but only get a message:  BP2 is not sure  
that '-tr.checkall-G3-19981021' is a grammar file. Do you want to lad  
it anyways? If I say yes, *another* file open dialogue appears,  
prompting me for a file... At that point I gave up.

One more thing: BP2 still eats a lot of recourses although doing  
nothing at times. About 1 Min after starting the program BP2 eats  
about 90% of processor time and the fans howl :)

I am not entirely sure where this error is coming from off the top of my
head.  If BP was going to fail to load its resources, I would have expected
a different message.  But I can probably track this down.

This would seem to indicate that my XCode project is set up incorrectly.  It
appears to be looking for (some) files using full paths instead of relative
paths.  I did not pay attention to those details since XCode automatically
imported my CodeWarrior project and it worked for me.  This should be easy
to fix.

Thanks again.  I'll try to post another binary and/or XCode project file as
soon as I fix these issues.

to continue your work...

I tried to install it on a Intel MacBook Pro with Leopard and got this  
Error-Message right at startup:

Error im=0 loading resource string list ID 303

After klicking ok, bp2 unloaded... So no way to test the rest...


When I try to compile, the build fails with 26 errors. I haven't found  
a way to excerpt the error-Messages into a file, but it seems pretty  
straitforward:

All files with a WE-prefix WEDrawing.c, WEBirthDearh.c... complain:

  Command /Dev..../gcc-4.0 failed with exit code 1
  powerpc-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.0.1: no input files
  powerpc-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.0.1: waring: '-x c' after last input  
file has no effect
  powerpc-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.0.1: /Volumes/Data/Users/anthony/ 
Developer/devprojects/BP_CVS/cvs.... No such file or directory

available to you for some testing.  This build requires OS X 10.4 or later.
Future builds will probably not be so particular.

This will be easy to check. I remember using the '¬' as a line break. The
Euro sign is normally unvalid. This update might be an opportunity to
systematically save grammars and data in HTML format and make it cross-
platform. In the current version it is only an option.

Anyway, it is great news that the code has been rebuilt successfully!

A short update:

I was able to get BP2 to compile with XCode 3.1 over the weekend.  Only a
few small changes to the source code were needed once I figured out the best
compiler settings.  (BP2 is _not_ C99 standard-compliant code :)  I still
have a few small issues with getting the resources to copy automatically and
correctly into the application bundle as part of the build process, but if I
copy them manually, BP2 does run on my machine.  I will try to get these
issues solved and all of the code changes committed to CVS this week.

There may be a few issues with this XCode-built version of BP2 that require
closer examination.  One that I noticed via the compiler warnings is that
the character encoding used by the compiler is different.  So, some of the
"high ASCII" characters (such as € and ¬) that BP2 uses in grammar files,
etc. may not be understood correctly.  Other issues are almost sure to crop
up, especially on Intel Macs.

I hope to have a Universal binary for people to test by the end of the week.

Thanks Rainer for the feedback and offer to test the new Intel-native
version.  I think it should be easy to compile if you are willing to install
the 2 GB of Apple developer tools.  If not, then I can also just provide you
with a pre-built binary for testing.

I have gotten the same impression about most Mac musicians using 10.4 or
10.5.  Nevertheless, I am reluctant to drop support for 10.2 or 10.3 without
a compelling technical reason or at least hard evidence of the lack of
interested users running those versions.  My reluctance is a result of my
own frustration as a 10.2 user over the last 4-5 years when no one seemed to
be compiling new software for 10.2 (even when possible).  So, my current
feeling is that as long as Bol Processor does not require an OS technology
available only in newer versions and as long as it is practical to build BP
for the older OS versions, I would like to target 10.2 or at least 10.3 as a
minimum.  This is of course open to discussion and subject to change :)

I'm looking forward to this. I have a Intel MBP, Leopard and the  
latest XCode. So if it's easy to compile a I could try to follow a  
cook-book to give you some feedback - but I won't be able to offer  
more than it works, yes or no :).

As to downwards-compatibility: in my impression Mac-Users, especially  
in the music domain, are highly update-friendly. I'd doubt there are  
many users even of Panther left. But maybe I am wrong ... :).

Hello to everyone interested in the future of Bol Processor!

I want to let all of you know that last week we began the next round of
development for Bol Processor 2.  The last update (2.9.6) revived the
project and brought it to the world of Mac OS X users.  While this was a
significant step forward, we realized at the time that we were still one
step behind Apple and Mac OS X development.

BP 2.9.6 is a Mac OS X-native application that runs natively on PowerPC Macs
and under Rosetta on Intel Macs.  That version of BP was also built using
the commercial CodeWarrior development tools that were not available to most
other interested developers and targeted Mac OS X 10.2.  The current
standard for Mac development is to create "Universal Binaries" that run
natively on both PPC and Intel on 10.4 or 10.5 and that are built with
Apple's XCode development tools (available for free to all OS X users).

So, I have upgraded one of my own computers to OS X 10.5 "Leopard" and have
begun the process of converting BP2 to build with XCode.  Once that is
finished (probably later this week), then I will begin making changes and
testing for Intel-compatibility using a Universal Binary version of BP2.

I will announce on this list when a working XCode project is available.
Anyone else who is interested in trying to build and test BP2 is encouraged
to give this a try!  I will help you get the tools set-up if necessary.
Other developers are invited to start contributing ideas and/or code as
well.

BP2 users can help us at this stage by providing some feedback.  With the
current round of changes, it seems likely that we will have to stop
supporting the "Classic" Mac OS (versions 7 to 9) in new versions of BP2.

Hmmm ... well I guess if using the CPU like that makes your fan run on high,
it could be pretty annoying.  There may be some moderately simple things
that I can do to lessen the CPU usage in the code.

I do want to thank you, Jacob, for your interest in Bol Processor!  And do
feel free to try BP 2.9.6 on your Performa as it still runs on anything as
old as System 7! (Just be sure to install OMS for Midi).  You will get a
very nice "retro experience" since that version of BP uses colorful windows
with rounded corners :)

Regarding a Universal Binary, I am currently planning some kind of an
upgrade to my computers.  I will either buy a new Intel Mac or upgrade my G4
to 10.4 or 10.5.  I will then be able to port BP2 to XCode and the Intel
architecture.  I'll be moving forward with my upgrade plans within 2-6 weeks
but I'm not sure how long it will be before the computers are fully usable
for development work again.  (I need to do a lot of backups and shuffle
files around, etc.)

This CPU aspect was perceived as less critical as we may figure out that musicians would not run BP2 along with CPU-greedy sotware (video editing etc.) in the same time.

I am now trying to figure out the next phase as suggested by Anthony.

Thanks Rainer and Bernard for confirming that the icons show up (at least
most of the time).  I would like for BP2 documents to have the correct icons
even when they do not have the new extensions, but perhaps this is more OS
X's fault than ours if they do not.  (And I think different versions of OS X
behave differently in this respect).

I will sleep easier knowing that most new users will see icons though :)

I have tried this on a machine that never ran BP2 in MacOS 9 version.  It works great.  If you create a new grammar with the ".bpgram" extension, or if you append this extension to any file name, it immediately puts the usual grammar icon.  The same with other document types.

The nice thing is that the icon remains if you remove the extension (unless, indeed, if you put another extension that is meaningful for the system).  This way I created grammars using the old file naming "-gr.mygrammar" and they have the proper icons.

After playing around with many files I got the feeling that this version behaves perfectly with respect to icons, extensions, double-clicking files etc.

I take the opportunity to say that the new version with icons in the menus is a great enhancement for quickly locating windows.

Problem is, I don't remember myself exactly where those files come  
from - I think there is an additional download for people wanting to  
try existing grammars and I stored them in a folder I called  
Documentation... Sorry (I hope this doesn't spoil the test).

Thank you for your continuing efforts. Please feel free to ask me for  
any specific little test you need  - on or off-line. (I have a Intel  
MacBook Pro 15'' and use SimpleSynth for the time being). I am very  
involved in a project during the next three months so I can't do what  
I would wish to do - learn bbpII properly and work with it - but I  
can always take a moment and check something out if you need it, and

grammar to the Desktop, and then look at that file's representation on your

rectangle with "S -> A" and "A -> xy" written in it).

I can see all sorts of Icons in the Documentation:

a brown rectangle with gree alpha
gram rectangles in various colours
light blue (standing upright) with two small circles an lines to them
blue rectangle with horizontal arrow, one pointing to left and one to  
right
yellow with BP2 written on top and something green in the middle...

and quite a bit more

is that good enough or do you need more?

that has _never_ had an OS 9 version of BP2 installed on it?  Do you see
different icons in the Finder for BP2's grammar files, alphabet files,
settings files, etc.  ??

As we are nearing the release of a stable version 2.9.6 of BP2, I would like
to offer to all of you this updated beta version of the application for
further testing.  There have been many bug fixes and improvements since the
March 27th beta, as well as a couple of new features.  As we would like to
release a stable version in a couple of weeks, now would be a great time for
bug reports and feedback!

You can post your comments to the list if you like or send them directly to
me or Bernard.  Interface bugs in particular should go to me :)

Known problems with this beta:  Bernard is still tracking down an overflow
issue with very complex grammars.  While you can now save your CoreMIDI
settings to a new file type (-md or .bpmd), they do not yet get
automatically loaded with your grammar.  (If you save a "-md.startup" file
though, it WILL be loaded when BP2 is launched).
