In version 2.40 the outdated FreeDOS guest docs got deleted.

You must read the message regarding software licenses in
Section 1.6 before you install or use MS-DOS, OS/2, DR-DOS,
or any other DOS as a guest operating system in Bochs.

2 problems:

  • OS/2 is not a DOS
  • you de facto neglect the existence of FreeDOS

DOS works for me inside BOCHS, CDROM not tested, mouse OK, XDMA buggy (hadn't I reported this as BUG?) so disable it, network untested, USB untested, sound untested.

Please re-add FreeDOS, even if the amount of info will be minimal.

If I brew a FreeDOS floppy image, would you add it into the package (besides or instead of the 10 MiB Linux) ?

The "guest-dos" can be renamed to "guest-ms-pc-dos", and mention DRDOS/OpenDOS/EDR-DOS (partially open source but not GPL, RTFL and RTF 6.1 yourself) too, and link to FreeDOS not suffering from licensing problems.

    More test results to document:

    • Mouse wheel doesn't work. CT 2.1 rejects both wheel mice offered by BOCHS. CT 2.0a4 not tested. Default mouse works well with CT 2.1 if "/O" is NOT specified, if it it specified, it can work or hang temporarily or permanently (BOCHS BUG???).

    • SB16 works, but docs are inferior http://bochs.sourceforge.net/doc/docbook/user/bochsrc.html

Make it smaller to fix non-continuous sound.

    it should also say:

Smaller value will cause hanging if host system performance is
insufficient to play continuously and in real-time. Make it bigger
if BOCHS hangs short after playing starts. Bigger value
results in less bad non-continuous playing but without hanging.

Volker changed the user manual about DOS for 2.6.2
You already could see the change in the same location as you pointed in the beginning
    http://bochs.sourceforge.net/doc/docbook/user/guest-dos.html

If you think that more stuff has to be updated - you are welcome to propose the text and most likely it will be accepted as is and updated in the docbook.

For Wiki - it is great that you talking about it!
I am opened Sourceforge MediaWiki service a while ago but actually I cannot control it. My dream was to let people to shape the wiki, write pages and allow Bochs project admins to manage it. I asked question in the mailing list if anyone would like to contribute and heard silence. I suspected that nobody except project admins actually can't update Wiki but I have no idea how to control it ! And I even wasn't able to open Sourceforge service request because I had no confirmation for the fact that nobody could edit wiki except admins. Now I have the confirmation :)

Can I edit it too ?

What about the floppy image ? I have a (dirty for now) 1.4 MiB floppy image
with some "spectacular" DOS stuff ... could it be included ?

Better: http://pastebin.com/download.php?i=LbGuM1y7 (14 days until death)

Possible/open BUG's in BOCHS (should I open separate items?):

    • XDMA 3.1 doesn't work and causes (???) subsequent trouble with floppy (!!!)
    • Mouse wheel doesn't work and causes (???) subsequent trouble with floppy (!!!)
    • PC speaker depends from SB16 (???) ... and by default SB16 is OFF and PC speaker ON (!!!)
    • can't change PC speaker frequency without switching the sound OFF before (OK on real hardware). Testcase: "6A4AuR4A6DUA6AUAuABMzSG6DAC70AfoEAC7QAboCgBKdfHkYST85mHDsLbmQ5PmQojg5kLkYQwD
      5mG5AQAxwI7AJqBsBCY6BmwEdPni88M=" http://board.flatassembler.net/topic.php?p=158576#158576
    • BOCHS behaves badly if disk image has the "R" attribute set
    • trouble/hanging with floppy in some cases (XDMA, wheel, restoring saved state, ???)
    • Docs FreeDOS
    • Docs SB16 and PC speaker
    • On ATA you can attach "disk" or "cdrom" ... I'd suggest renaming into "harddisk" and "cddvd"

I think you start opening bug tickets for individual items (of course if you sur ethat this is the real Bochs issue).

For each item please supply instructions to reporuce and also

    1) what is expected behavior
    2) what is observed behavior

For example I canot guess what do you mean by "BOCHS behaves badly if disk image has the "R" attribute set" or "Mouse wheel doesn't work and causes (???) subsequent trouble with floppy (!!!)"

    Hi

Did you check my docs proposal too http://pastebin.com/download.php?i=LbGuM1y7 ?

start opening bug tickets for individual items

    I will

For example I canot guess what do you mean

The mouse BUG is pretty obvious, enable wheel in BOCHS settings and load CTMOUSE 2.1b4 http://cutemouse.sourceforge.net/ with the "/O" switch ...

    • expected behavior: "mouse with wheel found"
    • observed behavior: "no mouse found"

    Post awaiting moderation.

    COOL :-D

Update: mouse wheel does work with CTMOUSE 2.0a4 (so BIOS is the problem)

This one http://bochs.sf.net/doc/docbook/user/bochsrc.html#AEN1454 is outdated too : "megs" is obsolete :-)

The "update_freq" should be improved, because existing text doesn't really tell what it does and what is the legal or useful range of values.

Another one "awaiting moderation". Please let me know whether you are interested in the floppy Image I'm brewing.

  • Stanislav Shwartsman

Yes, I'd like to have the floppy image you talking about.

I approved all 'await for moderation' message (have no idea why they were required it) but i don't see them anywhere ?

The sourceforge new Allure interface just a crap and I have no idea what is going with it :(

I dont' see separate bug report for mouse wheel story or XDMA, I see only one for PC Speaker.

    Thanks
    Stanislav

P.S. BTW, 'megs' in the .bochsrc docs is not mistake - we keep the 'megs' option both for backward compatibility and also as easier way to set both guest and host memory values.

I'd like to have the floppy image you talking about

Sent by mail (Alpha, to be finalized before becoming public, ideally having the BOCHS problems fixed too)

The sourceforge new Allure interface just a crap

    Indeed :-(

I dont' see separate bug report for mouse wheel story

    "fixed" by you

    or XDMA

    "fixed" by me
