I just tried piping into /dev/null instead, and for the first time since 
I can remember, 'Check Configuration' mounted and unmounted the smb 
shares fine twice in a row. It failed the third time though:

    smbmount //servername/sharename /mnt/mntpt -o
    username=whomever,password=clearTextPassword &>/dev/null
