[Bobs-devel] help

Hello,

I'm a newbie. I'm just wondering if BOBS works with a windows machine. What
i mean is that running BOBS on a linux box but the datas are pulled from a
windows machine to be backed up. If can, how is it done.

Yes. The linux machine just runs the backup. You can backup any Windows 
machine (and other types) on the network, as long as the directory to be 
backed up is shared.

In the BOBS admin interface on the linux machine, specify the windows 
computer, the share name, and  "smb" for the type of share.

If you actually try this, please let us know if you have more questions 
and/or how it worked. We're getting ready for a new release of BOBS that 
should make the setup a little easier.

I believe this refers to the directory on the local computer running 
BOBS where the remote computer's nfs exported directory is mounted. If 
you're backing up Windows computers and you aren't using the Windows nfs 
utilities, which I assume you're not, then nfs won't work for you. You 
will need to download the current CVS source and run the install from 
that, it has support for samba. Or you can wait for the next release of 
BOBS to download. If you need help downloading from the CVS repository, 
please ask, I have the instructions for that somewhere around here...

think this means to keep only the last 'x' number of incemental backups 
and delete the older ones. I'm not sure if that is actually implemented 
though. Perhaps the BOBS creater, Rene Rask, will verify my answers for you.

An example. You have an nfs share like this  someserver:/data/work 
Then the path you should fill in is "/data/work" because the is the nfs
share path.
But as Joe explained you do not need this for smb (windows networking)
backups.

This feature is not implemented currently. The number is how many days
you would like to keep backups for. eg. "15" would keep incremental
backups for 15 days. But again, since this is not yet implemented you do
not have to worry. just set it to "0".

There's an NFS utility that you can buy from Microsoft that lets Windows 
use NFS. NFS doesn't come standard with Windows.

It's installed on the Windows computer that you want to backup via NFS. 
But samba is much easier to use if you're backing up a Windows machine.

Here's how to get a copy of the current CVS source tree:

cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/bobs login

    When prompted for a password, just press Enter.

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/bobs co bobs

cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/bobs logout

The instructions are also at http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=54656, 
under "Anonymous CVS Access".
