Hi Tim I'm pretty sure this is not related to bobs. Please check these: What are the permissions on /tmp? (does apache have write access) What type of filesystem is /tmp located on? Are you using quotas? Does the partition /tmp is on have more than 5% free space? Ext2 and ext3 has a default which says that only root may write to the partition when less than 5% of the diskspace is free. A search on google groups might be more helpful, than what I can provide. Hope this helps. Rene PS: please send emails to bob...@li... instead of bob...@li... Checks for diskspace would be good too. Eg. Is there enough space to keep a "current" backup of the places being backed up. Bobs will not make backups if "current" is filled. I'm in the research/design stage of making a "test server" button. It
would be on the main admin page. You pick a server and it would check
some global things and then server specific things. It would show each
test as it's happening with an "OK" or "FAIL" next to it. Show command
output and some suggestion/explanation if something fails. It seems the
most common problem is getting bobs installed and configured correctly.
Global things to test:
* Show locations of bobs web and data directories.
* Verify check_loop is in crontab.
* Verify backup.php is in /etc/cron.daily.
* verify 'cmdloop' is running.
* The web directory <bobsroot>/inc/servers is readable and writeable
by the web server ($sys_conf["siteroot"]).
* bobs data directories are readable
$sys_conf["backupdir,incomingdir,incrementdir"]
* php has dba support (see phpinfo()).
* Backup email can be sent (when this feature is implemented). This
could also include backup logs.
* More...?
Server specific tests:
* Same as servercheck.sh.
* Show if completed backups exist.
* More...?

Great that you got it working. 1. Bobs always maintains a full backup. What happens when you run bobs is this: You get a "current" folder which is an rsync'ed copy of the original (with some files and folders excluded. eg. restore_files isn't backed up). While rsync'ing "current", the files that have changed, moved, been deleted or modified (compared to the files on the server they come from) are copied to a temporary "incoming" folder. After current backup has been rsync'ed, bobs tags the files in "incoming" with a date and moves them to the "incremental" folder. Bobs handles the database and some other stuff as well while doing this. The most complex part of bobs is the user interface. The backup routine is quite simple. 2. Yes, you can use cron to manage when a backup is run. Just remember that bobs smallest increment value is a day. Which means that you can run bobs severel times a day, but you will only get one set of incremental files for that day anyway. Your "current" backup will however be closer in time to the real servers. I hope this helps to explain bobs a little better. Cheers Rene > > > > Thanks > > > > James > > > > James W. I don't use nfs much, but my understanding is the user and password are
not passed to the nfs mount command, but the actual uid used to mount is
specified in the /etc/exports file on the remote machine. The bobs user
and password are necessary to access the bobs web page for that share
and maybe they're passed to the smb mount command, but I don't think
they're used for nfs, but I could be wrong.
Please try these things:
* On the remote machine, run 'tail -f /var/log/messages' while
testing the nfs mount. This will let you see why a mount fails.
* Mount the nfs share manually on the bobs machine. 'ls' the nfs
mounted directory. 'touch' a new file into the nfs directory to
check write permission. then unmount it.
* Try the cmdloop and backup.php and see what messages show in the
remote log. An invalid path name will say 'permission denied' on
the client.
If that doesn't solve the problem, please include the output from
./cmdloop and the relevant portion of /var/log/messages in your next post.

Hi Quentin You need to go to the administration pages to setup bobs. You'll find the admin.php page at the same location as the main interface. eg. http://yourhost/bobs/admin.php You can also read the included "install" document. The database errors are there until you have made a succesful backup. This is a bug (nothing fatal, just warnings) in bobs. Hi, Okay, So, I'm getting php errors... I have a host named "oho" oho is the bobs server. I need to backup a nfs shared directory on host poop aka poop:/exportfs/data-area to the local disk /data/array. I then also need to backup another system builder1:/data-area to host data-cluster:/project-area. What do I put where? I then also get errors from the database in the brows view. Thanks, Quentin __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Bingo http://search.yahoo.com |

Hi. Well, first of all. I can't recommend storing backups and live filesystems on the same computer. I hope you realize the problems which could arise from this. That said, it is possible to do it. If you are only doing backups from the server I think a local nfs mount or rsync service would be the way to do it. SMB is in my mind only useful for doing backups of clients that have smb as their native networking. Using localhost should be the fastest way of transferring files. If you want each induvidual user to have control of his/her own backups you will need to create a share for each user. Regarding RPM vs tar.gz. I usually prefer rpms when installing files. That allows you to uninstall bobs more easily than with tar.gz files (if you don't keep the original install source unmodified). Taht way you don't have to edit the crontab or manually remove system sensitive files. I hope this answers your questions. Otherwise feel free to ask again. The rsync service only needs to be started when doing pure rsync
backups. Rsync is used for backups of nfs and smb shares as well but in
these cases the rsync service doesn't need to run on the machines being
backed up (because rsync has direct access to the files using the mount
point)

It shouldn't matter either way. Bobs will mount the share again, even if
it is already mounted. You then have 2 mounts of the same share. Bobs
will unmount one of them when it has finished.

The crontab entry is installed in /etc/crontab. It should automatically
start the cmdloop from the crontab. If it doesn't it may be becuase cron
needs to refresh its settings. (eg. run "service crond reload" after
installation)

Hi folks, first of all: happy easter. I'm an IT-Professional in Berlin,Germany and having a client wanting a Fileserver, I want to setup bobs as backup system. If read the last 10 threads in the archive to get into it. I came across bobs looking for a backup system. The aim was to enable to costumer to backup his=20 files himself. Well anyway .... Now the question: 1. I'm setting the system up on a single server used as a. backupserver b. fileserver =20 This will fit for our needs, cause having about 6 win-clients, there's only a small amount of data to handle (in contrast to the 2-3 Terrabyte if read about on the screenshots = page) QUESTION: What would be the best method to use for backing up? NFS, SAMBA or rsync OR is there a way to get along without it? Just backup e.g. /home <- where all the document stuff is -> /dev/hdb to --> /backup -(/dev/hdc) where the bobs backup dir is=20 CAN You give any hints. 2. What would the best way, use the RPM or tar.gz or is it the best way=20 to checkout out from cvs? See you guys Jochen Metzger Berlin =20 |

Rene:
Thanks for your response. Since I am a newbie to this I have a few
questions:
1) My remote share was already mounted via NFS. If you are using NFS or
Samba for that matter do you still have to enable rsync? It is unclear from
the documentation if this is so.
2) Does BOBS have to mount the remote share itself? In other words should I
leave it unmounted?
3) It appears that whether or not you install from source or from rpm that
you have to manually start cmdloop. Is this correct or am I just missing
something. It also appears that the crontab entry was not made as well. Do
I have to do that manually? By the way, I'm assuming the crontab is
unstalled under roots' crontab.
I've uninstalled everything and am goin back and installing cvs source and
try again.
Thanks.

How about making more log files? Keeping the simple one and adding a more detailed one which could hold much more detailed outout. Viewable from the web interface of course. That would help in debugging future problems. It seems to me that the biggest problem is really the lack of detailed information to help both users and developers. -- Rene Rask <re...@gr...> |

I'm not completely sure, but it looks like the nfs mount doesn't
succeed. Please try to mount the nfs share manually using the settings
you have entered in the administration interface.
Bobs aborts backups if a mount fails.
I've committed patches to the cvs which adds output if the mount fails.
You can easily patch this in your own copy if you don't want to do a cvs
checkout.
Browse the cvs on sourceforge and take a look a the file
bobs/inc/templates/backup_nfs_mount_server.sh
add the line
echo "{SESSION_ID}.Preparation failed (mount)" >> "{SHSTATS}"
at the same place in your local copy. That will let you know if the
backup fails because of mount problems.
Cheers

That's outdated. The creating of directories and configuration files is now handled by 'make install' if you're using the tar.gz file, or by 'rpm' if you're installing from that. Look at the INSTALL file, especially section '7.0 Easy install'. If that doesn't answer your questions, please ask again. |

Hi, I'm trying to make BOBS work for me so that I can take one more thing off my list. I have started with your install manual and the 0.6.0pre1 tarball. I am re-writing the manual you posted to the help group as I go, making it a little bit more user friendly and filling in a few blanks. I am also making some changes to the code so the user doesn't have to create a bunch of files by hand. I hope this is okay with you and I hope you can give me a few minutes of you time to answer the odd question that comes up. First question is: in .../www/html/bobs/inc/servers I see two methods of configuration file management. You are using the file named with server name method but, I see directories with the servers name and a configuration file within... Which do you want to use in this tool? Also, do you have a basic (who cares about typos/ exact layout of files) design doc I can look at in order to find the code pieces I need to change. Thank you for your help. I'm having trouble looking back at previous posts so this may have been asked but here goes anyway: I've installed bobs on a RH 7.3 box using source. (maybe that's my problem!). Anyway its up and running but cmdloop wasn't running so I started that manually from the command line as described in the Install file. I then manually ran the cron backup.php file as well. It appears that it completed - i.e. there were no errors shown, but when I go to the web interface I get the following on the Browse Current tab: Warning: First argument to array_keys() should be an array in /var/www/html/bobs/inc/class_db.php on line 424 Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /var/www/html/bobs/inc/class_db.php on line 425 This is in the upper right hand corner: 679584042.Preparing backup 1668720340.Preparing backup but it doesn't appear that any backup has been run - I mean the backup should be about 14 GB of data....btw its an NFS mounted path to another RH 6.2 box. If you need more info let me know. TIA James James W. Beauchamp, P.E. 2121 Newmarket Pkwy. Suite 140 Marietta, GA 30067 phone - 770-690-9552 ext. 227 fax - 770-690-9529 www.gesinc.com |

Are you using the latest version bobs-0.6.0pre1? Did you install from rpm or tar.gz? What platform are you running? Redhat, Debian, etc. What version? I assume you are using samba to backup a windows box. Did you verify that you can mount the share and read and write to it from you linux backup server? What are you doing when you get this error? If you haven't had a successful backup yet you will get errors trying to browse "current" or "restore". If this is the case, read the INSTALL file section "You need to test the cmdloop script."
