My backup server is now running 0.6.0pre2 (upgraded from 0.5.1) and I'll keep an eye on it to see if any bugs crops up. I fixed a couple of bugs and committed them to cvs. Joe, do you have anything you want to add or fix before releasing 0.6.0? I think I'll work on automatic file deletion for the 0.7.0 release. That means that you will need as much diskspace for the "current" backup as you have files on your server. If you have 100 GB worth of files you are making backups of, you will also need at least 100 GB diskspace for the "current" backup. You need more space to keep incremental backup. "Current" is always a snapshot of the files at the time of backup. You cannot make incremental backup without keeping "current" up to date. "incremental" is nothing but the changes that happen to files in "current". > The reason > behind this question is that i see my disk space going down more and more > everyday... BOBS has no way of knowing that a user has deleted a file on purpose. Even if the users delete a file on purpose, they may later find that they need that file again. That is the purpose of BOBS. > Or will > the file be deleted from the backups after some time? Lots of files will be > unuseful on the backup server if theses files were meant to be deleted... You have to delete files manually. The delete feature is not a part of BOBS yet. The files are tagged by a number which is like "2003.121" which means that the files was added to "incremental" in the year 2003 on day 121 of that year. I usually delete files by a number of criteria: An example: I delete files older than 6 months. Check how much space is available. If if need more I delete files older than 3 months which are larger than 50 MB. If I still need more space I lower the MB size in steps until I reach a point where I have enough space. This should be made a feature in BOBS. I'd welcome any suggestion on criteria and structure. There are so many ways to single out files for deletion, and my criteria are most likely not going to match yours. That an open invitation to everybody reading this. Hi, I'm new to using this piece of software and there's a question i was asking myself. Is it possible to define a day in the week to do a complete backup whereas the other days, it will only do incremental backups ? The reason behind this question is that i see my disk space going down more and more everyday... So will i have to delete the files manually, or is there a proper way to do it? Another thing is when a file is being deleted on purpose by a user, will the file be stored on the backup server ?? Or will the file be deleted from the backups after some time? Lots of files will be unuseful on the backup server if theses files were meant to be deleted... I'm not sure if i'm very clear... :) Best Regards. -- Arnaud CONCHON ARCOBA Administrateur Réseau arn...@ar... 01.49.74.29.00 |

Assuming that both servers are running linux, here's and example: mount newserver:/path/to/files /mnt/newserver cp -a /path/to/the/current/backup/* /mnt/newserver/ umount /mnt/newserver go to the admin pages and adjust the settings if nessecary. That is basiclly it. BOBS was never meant as a failover solution. I made it to allow users to accces to files they lost in a easy and system independant way. I assumed that adminstrators would be able to restore a lost server in a sane manner, as described above. I guess this should go into the documentation. The admin interface now uses class rfasttemplate for all pages. I restructured the mainline code and some functions to make admin.php easier to follow and allow me to add some basic input validation and error messages. If anyone updating from cvs finds bugs, please let me know. |

We use the devel mailing list for everything. The cvs mailing list is an
automated mailing that gets sent out when code is checked in to cvs.
Yours is a valid question. I get those messages every day too. Even
though it says "cookie", bobs doesn't use cookies. It uses "sessions" to
store variables across web pages. That's what the PHPSESSID is. Php
sessions create a file with the name of the session id in the /tmp
directory. The file contains all the session variables. I don't know why
it says Set-Cookie, but I guess sessions and cookies must be closely
related.
I think it's the session_start() in /etc/cron.daily/backup.php that
causes the message. I'm not sure it's even needed there. I made a note
to look into it. I'd like to get it out of the logs because it's just
clutter.
I think the date is 1981 because it's really zero. I've seen some
old-style date fields that represent 'number of seconds since 1980' or
thereabouts. The date is meaningless and has no affect on anything bobs
does.
If you run it from the command line, you'll see the same thing:
[root@jupiter bobscustom]# /etc/cron.daily/backup.php
X-Powered-By: PHP/4.2.2
Set-Cookie: PHPSESSID=be82255ef59680420ddf0835624ee33b; path=/
Expires: Thu, 19 Nov 1981 08:52:00 GMT
Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate, post-check=0,
pre-check=0
Pragma: no-cache
Content-type: text/html
In fact, you can just run the session start from the command line and
see it, like this:
[root@jupiter bobscustom]# echo '<?php session_start(); ?>' | php
X-Powered-By: PHP/4.2.2
Set-Cookie: PHPSESSID=a992783c093d129b4f1a3395a4696e61; path=/
Expires: Thu, 19 Nov 1981 08:52:00 GMT
Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate, post-check=0,

I fixed the 'default admin password' check in systemcheck.php. It has to check the encrypted password now. I added a "Backup Now" button to the "Servers" page. You can select a server and click "Backup Now". But it doesn't tell you when it's done. I want to change admin.php to use rfasttemplate. It'll make it easier to add error messages and stuff. Admin.php needs a code cleanup anyway, it's pretty messy and hard to follow, even for me - and I wrote it. |

I encrypted the administrator password and created a page to change it. The link to the page is at the bottom of the 'servers' page. I wasn't sure where to put it so I just stuck it there for now. The default password is still 'admin'. I stored the encrypted admin password in it's own file in /var/bobsdata/admin.pwd because the httpd user (apache) didn't have access to update config.php, and it's better for security to get it out of the web directory. I love rfasttemplate. It made writing chgadminpwd.php so easy, and short. I don't have to worry about outputting html in the proper order. It's great! Joe |

I tried several times manually mounting and unmounting with and without the 'password=xxx'. At first it seemed to work without the password, then it continued to hang either way. I thought my problem was the computer I'm connecting to is a slow 166mhz running Win95. I assumed it didn't like the constant mounting and unmounting and would get confused. I just did a google search on 'smbmount hangs' and came up with this http://lists.samba.org/pipermail/samba-technical/1998-June/016855.html. Basically, it says to add '< /dev/null > /tmp/smbmount.out 2> /tmp/smbmount.err' to the end of the smbmount command to keep it from hanging when using autofs. I tried it from the command line and it seemed to keep it from hanging when mounting and unmounting over and over. Like this: smbmount //servername/sharename /mnt/mntpt -o username=whomever,password=clearTextPassword < /dev/null > /tmp/smbmount.out 2> /tmp/smbmount.err I wonder if you get the same results. Would you try it and let me know please? Thanks, Joe Zacky |

Hi,
I've seen in other posts where the (un)mounting can hang and it is theorized
to be "samba's problem." I am looking for ways to track this down, as this
problem chronically affects me.
I have run the same command that it runs and gotten the same results:
smbmount //servername/sharename /mnt/mntpt -o
username=bobs,password=clearTextPassword
This hangs for some time, eventually timing out.
when a slightly modified command is run:
smbmount //servername/sharename /mnt/mntpt -o username=bobs
the system will prompt for the password and procede normally. My theory is
therefore that the cleartext storage of the password will hang on samba
servers that expect the password to be encrypted. I was wondering if you
could confirm this or shoot it down. I'm encouraged in this analysis by the
plethora of "FIXME's" around all the user password references.
Is there a workaround (such as wrapping a call to crypt() or something?)?
Thanks in advance,
DC

Hi Peter There is no executeable in bobs. It is based on php and shell script which are run using a combination of php and cron jobs. You have to use your webbrowser to access the user and admin interfaces. Make sure you have apache running on the server where you installed bobs. Then access the webpage http://localhost/bobs/admin.php to set up bobs. The user pages are at http://localhost/bobs/ I'm CC'ing this the the developers list. Please use that in the future. Oh yeah. It just dies all over the place on a brand new server configuration. I'll work on that. Thanks, Joe Rene Rask wrote: >That is really nice. That is really nice. I did manage to find a bug however. The script assumes that /var/bobsdata/current/process/mounts/servername/sharename already exists. This is not the case when creating a new server/share, only when testing an already used combination. Other than that, I think a pre2 would be good. Basically I need to at least replace the error messages on new backups to have a system that is fit for a 0.6.0. This error checking stuff really helps as well. So, errors and documentation seems to be the most important things at the moment. Keep up the great work! I'm working on encrypting the admin password and providing a web page to change it. rfasttemplate sure makes things easier - I can move screen fields around without worrying about php outputting them in the right order, and it cleans up the php code. |

I've added all the configuration checks I can think of to servercheck.php. There's a "Check Configuration" button on admin.php - if you don't select a server it just checks the bobs system configuration - if you select a server it checks that servers configuration. I have some problems with samba mounts if I keep testing them (mounting and unmounting) they tend to hang, but I think that's a samba problem. I'm hoping these tests will help people solve the most common problems when installing and configuring bobs. I'd like to put out a new release (0.6.0pre2?) after you've had a chance to try these changes. Joe P.S. The Makefiles are in the man directory in cvs. I just tested downloading
bobs using anonymous cvs into an empty directory and the man Makefiles
came with it and everything compiled and installed.
Heres how the autoconf stuff works. I run this to generate a fresh copy
of the makefiles:
aclocal && autoconf && automake --add-missing && ./configure
aclocal
This generates the file 'aclocal.m4' which contains macros needed by
the other make tools.
autoconf
Creates 'configure' from 'configure.in'
automake --add-missing
Creates 'Makefile.in' from 'Makefile.am'. The add-missing creates
links to some files that 'configure' uses.
configure
Creates Makefile from Makefile.in
I do a 'make distclean' before I check in my changes. This gets rid of
all the files that aren't included in the cvs or in a distribution.
I run 'make maintainer-clean' after I've changed any of the '*.in' or
'*.am' files. This cleans up all the files built by aclocal, autoconf
and automake so I can ensure a fresh build using aclocal, etc...

There is a full backup everytime bobs run. That is in "current". Every file that differs when bobs does the full backup, is put in incremental. The are not incremental in the sense that you can easily revert to a state on a given day. Incremental is meant in the sense that there is a backup for a file for all the days that is has changed. > 2.When I edit the amount of incremental times in the admin area e.g. > with 10 > Does that mean, the system makes a full backup once, then 10 > incremental > backup and then a full backup again. No, that is a setting for a feature which is still not implemented. Hi folks,
I have setup bobs so far and it works beautifully and I really =
appreciate it.
You guys have done a great job..... ;o)
I still have 2 questions remaining:
1. when using smb as backup method, are incremental backups really done?
Or are they just in the incremental folder and it differs to rsync?
2.When I edit the amount of incremental times in the admin area e.g. =
with 10
Does that mean, the system makes a full backup once, then 10 =
incremental
backup and then a full backup again.
3.I'm running a backup to a harddisk which is slightly bigger, than the =
source
harddisk.=20
Is there a possibility to drop old backups after a certain time ?
Thanks for your help
P.S. I'm using bobs (although not really recommended) on single machine
with smb (for backup and restore -> localhost ) and it works =
soft.
Cheers

Neat stuff. A few comments: I have problems with ./configure and make. I need a Makefile.in and Makefile.am in the man dir. (I don't even know how to make those. I still don't get the whole autoconf, automake and configure situation.) I plan to make the incremantal/servername and current/servername dirs configurable (and proably incoming/server as well). It will make bobs much easier to maintain. Just a notice, so you do make something that has to be completely redone later. Do I win a prize when all the fields are green ;) Cheers Rene On Thu, 2003-04-24 at 08:26, Joe Zacky wrote: > If you get the latest cvs and go to > http://your.host.name/bobs/systemcheck.php you'll see the system > configuration test page I created this weekend. If you get the latest cvs and go to http://your.host.name/bobs/systemcheck.php you'll see the system configuration test page I created this weekend. Try 'killall cmdloop' then see what systemcheck.php says. I still need to add the individual server checks. You'll select a server and it will do the system checks then the server checks. I will test things similar to the way servercheck.sh does, using the cmdloop process. This was a fun script to write, and I learned to use rfasttemplate - it's nice. Joe |

Post the output of these commands to this mailing list:
* df
* ls -l /tmp
* grep 'session.save' /etc/php.ini
* which php
* locate php.ini
