I think that it is absolutely neccessary to have a file viewer to open alongside the file that you want to open, in the pop up file open menu.
I use this to get a macro view of the changes to the files that I have been working on. Also if you are changing file the names for a series of drawings IE:surfA, surfB, surfC, which are the same board with subtle changes you can get forgetful of which is the current prime drawing and a file viewer allows you to see graphically which is the latest drawing that you want to open.

Anyway, I want to combine something like the database and file chooser of aku ie. you have a filter/search panel with things like surfer name, file name, board length, etc. to limit the number of boards. Another panel where the selected board is shown in some detail (we can show crossections on top of the outline like shape3d does in the spec sheet). Instead of just the filename have a big panel with thumbnails of all the boards matching the filter. Need to be able to select the size of the thumbnails as well.

Should be implemented in several steps:
1)Simple file viewer where you can see the current board
    2)Search/Filter
    3)Thumbnail view
