How about making a modification to make this connect to an external USB gps dongle? From what I gather, this shouldn't be too difficult assuming the Android distribution contains a kernel driver for the dongle. (depends on the distribution, though, but some dongles are supposed to have in-kernel-distribution drivers, see e.g. http://club.dealextreme.com/forums/Forums.dx/threadid.907415 )

Depending on if this seems feasible and how my practical use case gets resolved, I might be willing to give the feature a try. I ordered a Chinese Android 2.3.1 tablet which was supposed to have an internal GPS, but apparently it doesn't have it - no mention in the paper manual, no GPS setting in Android settings menu. So I'm thinking maybe instead of shipping the tablet back and waiting another month or more for a replacement, I could connect an external USB GPS dongle to it. The tablet doesn't have bluetooth, and doesn't seem to recognize a bluetooth dongle. (probably the OS bundle doesn't have the bluetooth stack or drivers and/or the dongle is not supported on Linux).
