Mike, Is there a link to see the updated "seemore" plugin in action? On your website the entire story is shown on the index page. I too continue using Blosxom as it's fantastic! Simple to use w/o all the problems with malware, etc. Lee On Thu, Oct 8, 2015, Yahoo <mik...@gm...> wrote: > I'm still using blosxom for my blog, at www.mikedowney.co.uk > I'm mainly sticking with it through familiarity and inertia, I've been > using it for years and have it set up just how I like it and I really > don't have time to set up another blogging system and transfer a few > thousand posts and photos over. I'm still using blosxom for my blog, at www.mikedowney.co.uk I'm mainly sticking with it through familiarity and inertia, I've been using it for years and have it set up just how I like it and I really don't have time to set up another blogging system and transfer a few thousand posts and photos over. I've done a bit of plugin hacking, most recently modifying the 'seemore' and 'imagegallery' plugins to use JQuery to update the view without needing to reload the entire page - those, along with a 'like' button can be found at http://mikedowney.co.uk/blog/blosxom/2014 Mike. Blosxom is a program I really admire. Elegant, simple, and well-integrated with Unix commands and file system. However, I have often found myself wanting to structure my websites just a LITTLE differently than Blosxom assumes I want, so I reluctantly start on my own script, maybe throwing Blosxom on the server as a stop-gap. Then I forget about both the new script and the stop-gap site until I'm reminded by something like Jordan's e-mail. Hmmm, maybe time to brush-up my Perl skills and take a look at Blosxom again ... Plugins falling off the Internet has been a disincentive to doing anything more than basic blogging with Blosxom. Long Live Blosxom! -- David Meyer Takarazuka, Japan pa...@fr... |

I'd like to add that I've found blosxom very convenient for organizing data feeds. For example I have one "blog" for my twitter feed, and one for my Pinboard links. In both cases the data is semi-automatically collected into "articles" and then added to a static site using blosxom. * http://gerikson.com/linkblog/ * http://gerikson.com/twitterblog/ Of course any "blogging" platform that produces static content from flat files can be used for this. /g. Hi Jordan, I've switched to Pelican (Python static site generator) for my newer blogs but I'm still running the Blosxom blog I started in 2004: http://agilitynerd.com/blog/ If it meets your needs and you aren't afraid to hack on Perl code to write plugins/customizations there is no reason not to use it. :) I did find when my site got hit with big visitor spikes I had to put nginx with caching in front of it to keep the response time fast/server load low. Lee, I finally decided to do this also. This is how I did it. In the __DATA__ section: error divider

\n error showmore
\n So it uses the browser to scroll to the id'd fragment which is only inserted on the target page. In the blosxom.cgi, under "Configurable variables", file I have # What's my preferred base URL for this blog (leave blank for automatic)? set to: $url = "/weblog"; as I want the path to be "http://example.org/weblog/" but in using the feedback plugin (moderated) I get an email to approve/reject the comment with links like: ------------------------------------- To approve this feedback, please click on the URL /weblog/file-name-is-here.html?moderate=approve;feedback=HIuzMIjia To reject this feedback, please click on the URL /weblog/file-name-is-here.html?moderate=reject;feedback=HIuzMIjia ------------------------------------- I know the path in the feedback is taken from the blosxom.cgi file so my question is if I add the full path, e.g., http://example.org/weblog/, to the blosxom.cgi file will it screw-up my existing set-up? (Or I could just hardwire it into the feedback plugin I guess) I can just paste and copy the approve/reject link but it's just easier to click on it and be done. Thanks, Lee |

I'm having a bit of a problem with my RSS feed. Each post displays properly but at the end of each post I am only getting a relative link instead of an absolute link, e.g., this is what Blosxom formats:
instead of
This is what I have in my story.rss flavour:

$title

$body

The
part is the same as I have for the HTML flavour and it gives an absolute link but this doesn't. If you need to check the output, here is the feed: http://emetnews.org/weblog/index.rss ALSO I reuploaded my blosxom.cgi file as I needed to change a path but now I am getting the first (top) post appearing twice (although the source code is a bit diferent). Anybody got any ideas why that is now happening too? I am using Blosxom v2.0 Lee |

[I asked this on Facebook but haven't received an answer yet.] I am using the seemore plugin, v 0+3i, written by Todd Larason. I know that somehow it can be set so that a portion of the text is displayed on the main blog page. up to the expression, which works fine now, but there is also a way to make it so that when the reader clicks to see the entire post, it begins displaying at the text after the expression. The whole post is there, this just makes it so the reader doesn't have to find their place in the midst of the text. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks, Lee |

The community is certainly not vibrant, but there are a few of us die-hards minding the flame. Recently there's been some activity devoted to preserving plugins (a lot of bit-rot on the Sourceforge plugin registry) centered around the Blosxom Wiki (http://www.muli.cc/). We have our own mailing list (bl...@mu...), but I think most members also subscribe to this list. -- David Meyer Takarazuka, Japan http://papa.motd.org/cgi-bin/blosxom.cgi pa...@sd... |

It also let me put fairly aggressive nginx caching in front of blosxom to reduce the load on my server when I have a popular article and still give up to date comments. Agilitynerd.com is still running blosxom almost 10 years after I launched it! Best Regards, Steve Blogs: http://agilitynerd.com/ http://tech.agilitynerd.com/ |

I'm also using the same plugin, but a slightly older version (0.20) which doesn't even have Akismet support. I've also struggled with the spam problem, but got it pretty much under control by adding the following lines to feedback's is_spam function: return 1 if ($$params_ref{'comment'} =~ /http/); return 1 if ($$params_ref{'comment'} =~ /^Welcome!!!/); # Block coments with only letters, numbers and dashes return 1 if ($$params_ref{'comment'} =~ /^[a-zA-Z0-9-]*$/); return 1 if ($$params_ref{'comment'} =~ /<\/a>*/); return 1 if ($$params_ref{'name'} =~ /only/); return 1 if ($$params_ref{'url'} =~ /geocities/); Most of these are just checks I added after getting specific types of spam repeatedly, but the most effective check is the first one. This has the side effect that people can't put complete urls with http:// prefix in their comments (the url field still works as normal), but I changed the error message to tell people to just remove the http:// part, since I don't think feedback automatically turns urls into links anyway. > Any idea what the problem might be? So, that's pretty much what I do, which helps terribly well (especially since I only get a handful of comments each year or something, so it's not especially cumbersome for a lot of people). As for other solutions, I haven't actually looked into other solutions, and as I said, there wasn't Akismet support when I installed the feedback plugin (say, a year or five ago? ;-p). Gr. Matthijs |

The question seems a little strange. IMO, blosxom is more-or-less a finished project. It does what it needs to do, and doesn't really need more done on it. Attempts to push forward with "Blosxom 3" never really took off because it worked well enough as it was and attempts to build something more sophisticated also seemed to lose the simple elegance that made blosxom appeal to most of us. I don't see blosxom being in competition with systems like Wordpress. blosxom is designed for programmers who want to write articles in text files, and create their own plugins and templates. Many other people don't want to be that intimately involved with their publishing engine and Wordpress, et al, are a better choice for them. -kevin On Mon, Dec 31, 2012 at 1:06 PM, Robert Schmid <rsc...@ra...>wrote: > I wish I had found blosxom years ago. I wish I had found blosxom years ago. It is the perfect software for several small sites I maintain. It's small footprint and precise feature tuning make it ideal. But.... is it still vibrant? I see some of the plugins I needed are now gone. Will blosxom persist or is it giving in to the bloatware industry pushing CMS and blog software that nobody really needs? Robert |
