The simpler the better. Why not something like Palm does with their shortcuts? Define a character that is unlikely to be used as the first character of a word in a blog post (^ may be a good one) and use it as a prefix for the quick tag. So ^:) would enter a smiley. If the string doesn't match any quick tags, no replacement is made. For instance, if "foo" isn't defined as a quick tag, then if a user enters "^foo" then ^foo would appear in the blog.

One bug that I just noticed is that drag and drop doesn't work. I can't select text and drag it to another place in the editor. I'll enter that into SourceForge.
