#1 export causes blender freeze

i open a model in blender 2.42a and export to flt. I
see "Pass 1" in the console window and the CPU is at
50%. the .flt file exists in the file system but is
always at 0 bytes. Blender locks up during this time
and never finishes. I can convert the .blend file to
3ds or other formats in under 5 seconds.
