DEPRECATED: Walk Navigation in Blender 2.70 and later is better than this.
The Navigate Mapper Style addon lets you freely rotate and move the camera. It's somewhat similar to Blender's built-in Fly mode, but more responsive.
Note: This type of navigation doesn't really work in orthogonal view.

Setup
- Open Blender's User Preferences window and go to the Addons tab.
- Click Install Addon and specify the navigate_mapper_style.py file.
- Enable the 3D View: Navigation for mappers addon.
- Go to the Input tab.
- Inside the 3D View | 3D View (Global) folder click Add New at the bottom of the list.
- Expand the newly-added entry and specify view3d.navigate_mapper_style.
- Assign a hotkey. This navigation mode can stay active:
- Until you cancel it by pressing Esc or the right mouse button (if this is your preference, assign any key you like)
- As long as you hold down the middle mouse button (if this is your preference, assign a combination that includes the button; I recommend Alt+Shift+MMB, which is not taken by default)
- To make your changes persistent, click Save As Default.
