First, bitpim 1.0.7 can be compiled from source on your  machine, just make sure you have the kernel source packages first.  Need help, email me.

Secondly, the problem with ports being unavailable is because of permissions.  You COULD do it the right way (way too long and complicated), or you could just do it the easy way like I do....open a terminal, switch to root ("sudo su root") and then launch bitpim from the terminal ("bitpim").

Keep me updated on your progress...  :o)

I've been successfully using bitpim for several years, first with XP, 
and now, XP in a vm under Linux, but it never finds my phone when I try 
to connect directly with the Linux version.  It finds the device, but 
says it's not available.  How do I debug this?

I've got a couple of screen shots, but I have to wrangle some web space 
to put them in then I'll post links.

Joe - kubuntu lucid - bitpim 1.0.6 from the repos (couldn't figure out 
how to successfully install 1.0.7 after I ran the rpm through alien to 
convert it to a deb).
