I installed BitPim on Windows 7. I made sure I ran it with Administrator rights and I even turned UAC off. However, every time I try to run BitPim I get the error with a window heading bitpimw.exe - System Error and it says, "The program can't start because MSVCP71.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." How do I resolve this problem? Thank you for your help. |

That file is a component of the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library. I can give you a link to download that file directly from me, but please email me personally (not through this list) so my web address isn't made public. The file goes in the windows\system32 directory, and after copying it to that folder, register it with start - run and enter this command: regsvr32 "c:\windows\System32\msvcp71.dll" -Daniel On Fri, 2010-07-09 at 06:21 -0700, Rich Lusk wrote: > I installed BitPim on Windows 7. These files are files used by developers to make their job easier while. Each needed file *should* be included in the software installation file, but many developers use these files not realizing that not everybody has them. If it didn't get installed with some other software that required it, then you must install it individually. You may certainly install the whole entire bloated packages shown below if you desire; however, I recommend finding the file you need and registering it manually. Windows is slow enough as it is, in my opinion. I agree with you that the entire Visual C++ package is unnecessary bloat and that those capable of installing and registering just the files they need should do so, but do not blame the developers for not including them. These are Microsoft library files that they are legally not allowed to distribute. Here's some links from Microsoft describing the files, their use, and their redistribution limitations. The last link describes why and how to include them in the setup packages made by developers. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/k9a8ehy3%28VS.71%29.aspx http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326922 http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa984372.aspx http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa984684.aspx No, I'm not being a jerk, just wanting to clear the air that they are, in fact, redistributable. :o) On Thu, 2010-07-15 at 08:38 -0400, Bruce Gaylinn wrote: > I agree with you that the entire Visual C++ package is unnecessary > bloat and that those capable of installing and registering just the > files they need should do so, but do not blame the developers for not > including them. Much freeware, especially open source software, just says something like "You'll need Python" or "This software requires Cygwin" with no explanation of what that *is* or where to get it. With Cygwin, most often all that's actually required are a few of the DLLs which amount to a megabyte or less, dropped into the same folder as the program - but the authors expect the user to download and install the entire Cygwin system. (Which is almost a gigabyte for the complete thing!) Same deal with the various Microsoft runtime environments. The most sure fire method is to download the complete redistributable Visual Basic or Visual Studio .NET runtime redistributable so that one copy of the files will be shared amongst all apps that need them, but often only one or two are needed and can be placed in the program's folder. If you're writing software, you'll save yourself a lot of support questions, and a lot of upset for your users, if you make sure to fully document ALL of the requirements, and if all it needs 'extra' are a few small DLL files, either include them in the download/installer or as a separate bundle (with instructions!) in case the user's computer doesn't have them already installed where they're accessible to all programs. |

YES, exactly my point. You were willing to do much more typing than I was, howevver. *L* On Tue, 2010-07-20 at 00:32 -0700, Gregg Eshelman wrote: > Software, even when it's freeware, should always include *everything* required to install/run it or at least provide links to where to get any additional software.
