What I would really like is a single binary download I can put in the downloads bit on SourceForge that people can just run. I doubt users actually care about languages, graphical toolkits or serial ports for that matter. People using Linux will be pleased to know that I am almost at the point of having a RPM with no external dependencies. Roger |

Hello, i just recently got bitpim to start up on Mac OS X (not without much effort and tears heheh) but now that i've got it running, it is still no use to me. I've narrowed my problem down to one area. When i go to "get phone data" i get a bunch of errors, narrowing down to the fact that in commport.py the line import serial is not accepted and returns an error of "No module named serial". I'd really like to help get the mac version up and running for as many mac users as we can so any help for this problem would be much appreciated. Thank you, Ian Andersen |

I'm not the serial communications expert ... but I know one. I will forward your email to my friend and see if he's interested in helping out. He has some spare time on his hands lately because his company is down by a plane (he was a damn good engineer writing serial communications, but spent all his $$ getting his commercial pilot's license ... all he wants to do is fly ... but will occasionally take on "special projects". When I come back in my next life, I want to be him!). --Moira Mahony At 07:33 PM 7/8/2003 -0700, you wrote: >Is anybody out there an expert on serial communications under Windows? >Experience using the standard Win32 comm port APIs would be most useful. > >There is some bug in reading phone book entries using the direct USB >cable. Instructions are at http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=75211 (follow the ones for anonymous access). If you are using Windows, then I would recommend one of the graphical CVS tools such as wincvs or tortoisecvs. Of course real men like myself use the command line :-) I would be delighted to add support for other phones to Bitpim (that is one reason why the project name doesn't have LG or 4400 in it :-) Roger |

Is anybody out there an expert on serial communications under Windows? Experience using the standard Win32 comm port APIs would be most useful. There is some bug in reading phone book entries using the direct USB cable. I think it is actually a buggy device driver but could do with a second opinion. If you can help, please contact me directly. Roger |

There is now an updated version of comscan available. The noticable feature of this new release is that it finds the pure USB cable that is now available at Radio Shack. Have any Mac or Linux users got the pure USB cable to work? I am also interested to hear the experiences of users with the pure USB cable. What I am finding is that reading the phonebook often stalls, but that the other operations are always reliable. And on one of my machines, the phonebook never stalls. If you have any insights, please post on the bitpim developer mailing list. Roger |

Thanks for all the updates. I have just had the "pleasure" of moving house amongst other things. My goal is to get 0.6 out with calendar support. I'll then work on completing the fields and import/export for 0.7. Roger |

As far as I can tell, Qualcomm has a reference platform that they improve over time. Each vendor then takes that code from some point and does their own "value add". I am more than happy to add support for other phones, but someone who owns each phone is going to have to do the testing, and preferably some tweaks to the coding. Roger |

Hi all. New Member. I am using a Samsung a530 and apparently it works with BitPim with the = appropriate cable. There are a few glitches of course. We(a530 users) can see and modify the file system on the phone using = BitPim but can not use the other tabs meaning planner and directory = features are unusable. As far as I can see from the error message it is = only a matter of pointing to the right files. because obviously the com = file is working correctly. The following is the error message that I get. Traceback (most recent call last): File "gui.pyo", line 180, in run File "gui.pyo", line 121, in __call__ File "gui.pyo", line 759, in getdata File "com_lgvx4400.pyo", line 114, in getphonebook File "com_lgvx4400.pyo", line 504, in getfilecontents File "com_lgvx4400.pyo", line 651, in sendbrewcommand BrewNoSuchFileException: No such file I am a Java/Swing developer by day with a good knowledge of Graphics = apps and would like to join you in development. Just thought you might want to fix your readme page (http://bitpim.sourceforge.net/readme.html). You have a link to the Python site that SHOULD point to www.python.org. Instead yours points to python.com which is a porn site. Also, I noticed that in BitPim v0.53 in the Phonebook section you have some fields at the far right that don't have real labels on them. It looks like the field labeled "?offset20c" stores information about voice recordings for voice-ativated dialing. I noticed that the only entries that have data in this column are ones that I set-up voice recording for. The last digit appears to match up with the last digit of the tag files sotored in "\VoiceDB\All\tags," but I don't know if this is significant. Finally, the column labeled "?offset111" appears to store information related to the picture associated with that contact. The last digit appears to match the index for the picture, but again I don't know if this is significant. -Tom _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus |

I read on the bitpim page that the > developer runs it in both linux and windows. if i can > get it to work i can create a package to distribute > it. To use it on Linux: - Ensure you have Python installed (this is the language bitpim is written in) - Install wxPython from http://www.wxpython.org (this is the graphical toolkit used) - Install pySerial from http://pyserial.sourceforge.net (this deals with accessing serial ports) - Checkout the source code using CVS from SourceForge. Instructions are at http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=75211 - run bp.py Packaging is not as trivial as it sounds. Doing a straight forward RPM is simple, but will give the user dependency hell. Also pySerial is not available as a RPM. The other form of packaging (which I use on Windows) is to bundle all dependencies up and make it look externally as a single self contained package. There is software that helps do this (see McMillan installer). I will be doing both of these eventually myself unless someone else does first. My current priority is to finish the calendar stuff (which turned out to be as much work as almost all other features combined), polish remaining things up and then do a 0.7 release. In 0.8 I will focus on import/export. Roger |

I'm developer and would like to run bitpim on linux. is there a way i can get the python source code so i can try it out. I read on the bitpim page that the developer runs it in both linux and windows. if i can get it to work i can create a package to distribute it. thanks, James J __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Not to jump in here, but the problems you are having would probably be = better answered in one of the Yahoo! support groups instead of the = BitPim Developers forum. I would recommend either the Yahoo LG_VX4400 = or vx4400support group. You can access either of them via Yahoo!. This = list is designed for the developer of the BitPim application.
