OK, I think I'll have a go :-)
Just don't have enough disks available to make backups of all important 
files, so have to proceed very carefully...

Have you thought about installing a web front to the CVS?  Chora, the new 
one from Horde.org looks very nice - they are now using it on cvs.php.net 
and very good it is too.
