yes, you would use a bc master, but really that doesn't add any work. it
means that you'll use smarty for module output, which would work quite
nicely.

as far as "possible to have the entire page rendered from smarty" yes,
absolutely - in the future.

I'd like to get to the point where master templates and layouts are just
templates - nothing special about them except default module associations.
