Thanks for the information I needed to verify that the system was not
completely working. Let me describe what the results are of the tests
'you'll still be able to start up your bika at http://localhost:8080/bika';: yes, although I accessed it via the intranet at http://192.168.0.215:8080/bika. It presented me with a page I had created in the 'home' folder and short-named index_html.
2. 'you won't be able to create any new clients, analyses, anything
': In fact, when logged in as admin, I was able to create and
delete users (via site setup > Users and Groups Administration
attempts to add/modify anything to do with Analyses resulted in a
3. 'going to http://localhost:8081, there shouldn't be an incremented
number on refresh (well, there shouldn't be anything)': Going to
http://192.168.0.215:8081/ brought up the 'Zope Quick Start' page.
I am looking for a way to automatically restart (in the all too common
situation where a power bump or the like causes a system reboot while I
am not around but lab staff are).
As I make progress I will let you know.

Because any time you create a new object, the system needs an ID, and it is supposed to get that from the ID server.
