I am not aware of any issues with that mechanism. Is the JVM suffering extreme GC? You might also check the server logs to see if there is a problem with the EXPLAIN rendering for that query. I believe that this is the QueryLog class. The code is quite defensive, but it might be hitting a problem that prevents correct rendering.
