[Big-devel] Problem Mapserver error message

I've put together an in-house development site for testing the AVH, but
have come up against an error message from MapServer:

"loadSymbol(): GD library error."

The MapServer home page lists this as an error with the use of GIF files
in the *.sym file, but I can't find any reference to GIF files in our
avh/symbols/symbols.sym file.

Is there any other reason I'd be getting this?  Does GD need to be
installed?  If so where should I expect to find it?
