Biblatex 1

Objective: Provide a stable release which works with both BibTeX and Biber. The 1.x releases gradually move the development focus to Biblatex 2. The BibTeX backend is still supported but major new features are "Biber only".

Biblatex 1.4

• Improved disambiguation for individual names (uniquename) (#3031149) and the 'labelname' list (uniquelist) (#2271583)

Biblatex 1.x

• Support for reprints, translations, and other types of linked entries

Biblatex 2

Objective: Drop BibTeX support altogether. Before new features are implemented, all BibTeX-specific hacks are removed from the code. After that, new features are added provided that they do not affect the data model in a fundamental way. Fundamental changes to the data model are deferred to Biblatex 3.

Biblatex 2.0

• Remove all BibTeX-related code from Biblatex
• Support for arbitrary lists/multiple sort orders

Biblatex 2.x

The 2.x releases introduce new features but maintain backwards compatibility in terms of the data model. Ideas include:

• Interface for adding new fields and aliases (#3056955)
• Multi-script support

The objective of Biblatex 3 is a revised, richer data model.
