I've used BGinfo previously running it in a GPO on windows machines at start up to change the logged out wallpaper to display "messages people need to know before logging in" and after login to change their wallpaper with messages based on the group they are in (different gpo for each group). Is it possible to
    1) run BGinfo4x from a a server location without too much or a performance hit? (school situation where many users all log in at the same time multiple times daily). I'm sure I've read some thing about this not be
    2) to update the "logged out" wallpaper (and only do this when the user is logged out) separately to the logged in one?

One of the benefits of BGinfo4x is that is can be set to update regularly. I'm thinking if I set it off updating at PC start up (prior to login) it may continue to update when someone logs in when a different set of messages needs to be displayed and the two may interfere.

    3) in IMMODE can I put a semi transparent rectangle behind the text so that white text still shows up well even in the background image is a light colour? I've done this manually in the past but this new project is too large for me to continue manually adding the dark area.

  • BGINFO for X and for Windows!

    Hello,

    1) No, it is not possible to run BGINFO4X on a network share without a big performance hit, unless you have a 1GB network or more.

It is not recommended, not supported and is very slow. Try it!

In my opinion, the network paradigm must be solved with the BGINFO4X Server, not with UNC paths.

    2) To do this, you need to create a BGINFO4X as a service. I will think about it. But, ... one question ... what type of messages do you want to put on the logout wallpaper? Why don't put the messages on the normal user wallpaper?

    3) Do you mean something like the attached image? If so, check for the variable underground like -> BACKGROUND_HEADERFILE="rgba(0,255,255,0.25)"

Play with RGB and the alpha channel (transparency).

Or what do you mean exactly?

Thanks a lot for your comments.

    Thanks for your reply.
    1) ok. In terms of deployment is it just a file copy?
    2) messages such as "email currently down" or "don't forget to turn off the projector " or a list of rules, or a description of the artwork in the image being displayed. Stuff people need to know before logging in. Also for auditing we can wake on LAN the suites and then quickly use the text on the screens to identify pcs, serial numbers etc without needing to log on.
    3) that's exactly what I mean, thanks...

    Hello again,

    1) No, it is not just a file copy. It is a folder copy.

You should copy the BGINFO4X folder in a network share, but I advise you that this is not supported and it is very slow.

    2) I see ..., I like the idea of using serial numbers without login. I will think about implementing BGINFO4X also as a service, after the .msi package implementation.

    3) Ok.

    Regards.

    1) You must copy the install folder BGINFO4X on the remote server, and execute the BGINFO4X launcher on the clients.

    2) You can do the point without a service, following the article:
