The top part goes away when I click on the desktop until the sleep
counter returns. That's normal.
The bottom info I cannot get to go up the screen. In
/BGINFO4X/CUSTOM/CONF/CUSTOM.CONF, I found the Southeast line and
changed the x/y below but it did not make any difference. Ubuntu 11.04 x86.

Hello,
Are you in RTMODE or IMMODE?
Can you paste a screenshot?
I suppose that you are in IMMODE, so to up the screen use
BGWALLPAPER_YOFFSET="+50" #For example

Yes, I am in IMMODE. Interestly, I changed the X and Y using BGWALLPAPER_?OFFSET and it moved. Like taking your car to the auto mechanic :)
