Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

I put our secretary here at the company to use BeOS and BeRDP+rdesktop port. Good n' old P166 96MB RAM working as a fat client. = ) Today (17/02) is the first production day. Two problems so far, both related to screen: 1. Animated images on IE and others cause some lag in mouse responses. It's understandeable, but I thing that it could be cached or somethins. Since I don't have a Linux machine here to compare how it works on that situation, but well... it's not working very good at BeOS =) 2. Word 2003. Every time she needs to go up and down in the document using the scroll bars, the text area turns black, even forcing bitmap updates. It came back to white when a key is typed at the document (not a very pleasant experience). In case that you might be wondering, the video board is a RIVA128, PCI, using default drivers. I'm using 16bit in rdesktop. The screen is set to use 32bits, 800x600, 85Hertz . I haven't tried to mix the screen depth and the rdesktop yet. Btw, I'm about a week without Internet access (...), so I couldn't work on BeRDP. I'm in charge to add MIME support to the BeRDP, The format of the .RDP files is pretty simple. So far I just don't figured out how the password is stored... any clue would be welcome. Oh, right, I didn't see there was no fnmatch.h, as I do have one in libmoreposix. Actually libroot does export the function defined there, though it seems to be broken. I'll look into that. As I said, I don't have the patch here, and those changes were stright out of my head, as far as I recalled them, and might contain some errors, but the main point of telling those was to convince Matt that it wouldn't be hard to get rdesktop to compile on net_server. Also I told you those changes on BeShare when I got it to compile and work. I looked at the changes, and all those changes needed were to add #include <sys/socket.h> to beos.cpp and to rdpr.c, and comment out #include <fnmatch.h> from file.c. Also, as I updated the original rdesktop source from rdesktop cvs, it adds a new change needed for net_server, and maybe for bone too, as at least net_server libraries don't include fchmod() function. ----- Original Message ----- From: "François Revol" <re...@fr...> To: "Ilzu" <il...@ho...> Sent: Thursday, February 12, 2004 2:40 PM Subject: Re: [Berdp-general] Net_server and PPC support you're not supposed to include net/socket.h but sys/socket.h and nothing else. I was hoping that something like this would be the case ;-) OpenSSL - is there a specific version needed? Any chance that the changes mmu_man mentions could be released? As for rdesktop, is this the native version or the X version? The need to port X to PPC is not something I want to have to do ;-) Is the native rdesktop source available yet? I have mmu_man's RDEsktop port running on x86 with net_server. It needed only few changes to the bone version to copile and work on net_server. I don't have a patch for those changes here, but as far as I recall, only changes needed were to add #include <string.h> and/or #include <net/socket.h> to few files, and to comment out one include in disc.c. For porting it to ppc openssl would be needed first. I've been looking at the openssl for ppc, but I haven't had time to make it compile yet. Are there any plans to support the Net_server, rather than just BONE? I know mmu_man will argue about BONE being the true network stack, or whatever (seen this in a thread on a forum somewhere iirc), but I am a PPC user and we simply *do not* have any option *but* to use net_server. This plainly points out that BONE is not the right way to go for a R5.03 build. You cut out everyone on the PowerPC platform and further relegate us to third class users. I therefore petition you to support net_server so I can port to PPC!! (this is slightly tongue in cheek, but quite serious too on the porting part.) PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!! Matt :-P |

I didn't give my permission to put the binary on a public site, did I =3F Btw, as it's GPL you know you're supposed to have the source to distribute that :p What if my hdd fails and I can't get the source back =3F :D Anyway. Fran=E7ois. |

Hey there... Nearly finished keyboard handling... it's not quite usable, as you can see: http://clapcrest.free.fr/revol/beos/ shot=5Frdesktop=5Fnative=5Fjust=5Flogged=5Fin.png (the white background on the text in this one is fixed now) http://clapcrest.free.fr/revol/beos/shot=5Frdesktop=5Fnative=5Ffonttest.png Only still some weirdness on the icons, because they are drawn with a complex mode we'll have to emulate. Nearing a public release :) Fran=E7ois. |

Hello there... I've been told some ppl were upset because I was working on rdesktop. Let's set things straight, I just resumed what I already started, because I didn't see much change for long around. Now the BeRDP login client looks great, but still, I didn't see anything rdesktop related in the cvs there, so I don't see where it would colide with anything. :p Just one day I went through the patch I did and began to play around, then continued on the momemtum. In no way it was triggered by anything bad minded like competition. And since I already got the drawing stuff working correctly enough I'll continue on the keyboard stuff to get something functionnal, then we'll see what to do. I think integrating the login dialog from BeRDP into rdesktop would be very nice. And it should be quite easy since there is a hook called to setup the gui, so we can check if there are parameters there, if not then popup the dialog and overwrite the params with the new ones (they are globals).
