just checked - i get the same behaviour in my debian installation too. 
The error means that BMP doesn't know which type of playlist you want to 
save. Saving file as "foo" doesn't work. However, saving "foo.pls" DOES 
work.

Developers should have probably specified the default type for a case 
like that.
