We have a need to store our encrypted object file in EEPROM and at startup decrypt load the object code from the EEPROM into a DSP. We will be using bcrypt as is to encrypt the file to store in the EEPROM. But I need to decrypt and load the code from the EEPROM in chunks due to RAM limitations. Is there a problem with using all of bcrypt but the main if I keep the LICENSE file with it? Randy Jones |

I've tried to encrypt a file with twice the same word, for example "eggheadseggheads", and as long as each word is at least 8 letters long, you can decrypt it with only one word. for example, if you encrypt it with "eggheadseggheads", you can decrypt it with "eggheads". if anyone can help me understand that, thank you very much. |

Hi all, the error seems to be memory-related. I encountered it on some memory restrained systems we use: bcrypt seems only to be able to encrypt/decrypt files that are smaller than half of the available RAM. I am by no means a programmer, so I can't help with much more then this *"mee too"*-message. Regards, Christian. Hello, I just encountered a serious bug. I encrypted a 7.1GB file. The resulting encrypted file contained only the first 682 MB of data - but no error was reported and the original file was removed. This is a serious bug as my original file is now lost. It is necessary that the deletion of the original is only done on assured success of the encryption. Additionally an error should be printed when encryption fails. I have ubuntu 9.10 and bcrypt 1.1-5 (ubuntu version number). Well can not attach the original 7 GB file as it is lost ... |

Ah... you drew me out of hiding. I think if I ever do a new version of bcrypt, it's going to have to break backwards compatibility to get the features people want as well as make things like this a little cleaner to fix. In the meantime, here's a kludge that seems to work as far as I've been able to test. Thanks for the gdb/efence checks! The root cause is a key that ends up ending in a NULL after mutation and some really ugly code that was stripping NULLs from the end of the data because they are used for padding. johnny --- wrapbf.c.orig 2010-01-15 15:31:03.609375000 -0800 +++ wrapbf.c 2010-01-15 15:33:32.093750000 -0800 @@ -108,6 +108,9 @@ sz -= MAXKEYBYTES; + for (i = MAXKEYBYTES - 1; i > 0 && (memcmp(mykey+i, "\0", 1) == 0); i--) + sz++; + if (memcmp(*input+sz, mykey, MAXKEYBYTES) != 0) return(0); Quoting Drew Crawford <dr...@se...>: > I'm experiencing some strange behavior. I'm experiencing some strange behavior. Configuration: Mac 10.6.2; I've edited the makefile to compile -m32 but i'm on x86_64. The following command: bcrypt -rc any-file consistently creates a .bfe file that cannot be decrypted, but only when using the specific encryption key: Sfjhm7SgcmMSTVQWd152c87heOWEZvPL The error message in question (during the decrypt) is: Invalid encryption key for file: some-file I'm using software that randomly generates and manages encryption keys with uniform length and characteristics, and we only have trouble with just the one key. Hoping this makes sense to someone. Thanks, Drew |

Dear all, I'm trying to make openssl play nice with bcrypt - so far to no avail... Could you give me a hint on how bcrypt derives it's encryption key from the passphrase given and on what type of blowfish cypher bcrypt uses (ie cbc, ecb, ofb)? We have a multitude of, let's say, "legacy files" which are encryptet with the passphrase " 12345678" and would like to cope with them using openssl under Linux. Thanks and best regards from Hamburg, Germany, Christian Schmidt. |

Hi, I'm trying to use PHP and Mcrypt to decrypt a file that has been encrypted using bcrypt 1.1. I've modified bcrypt to dump the 448-bit key it has generated and am using this snippet to try and decrypt the payload, which is simply the LICENSE file from bcrypt, encrypted without compression using the same "eggheads" key. <?php /* * Bcrypt uses a 56-byte (448-bit) key. */ $key = pack("H*", "1E8CD6418B373C741C415CF5F0E482476C66B1FDC3E37EEEFE7C8C704D9139A9A4CA24B53858A261C59F4F94383F9046D38E16A9E21BB242"); // $key = pack("H*", "85071DE15C3282516DD6B725BD7A1511B6639928BE1D4F99E54DF3FC4C811E48038FDE1669CAA017516FA502785B8D020616F26A61CCB39D"); $td = mcrypt_module_open(MCRYPT_BLOWFISH, '', 'ecb', ''); $iv = '00000000'; mcrypt_generic_init($td, $key, $iv); $plaintext = mdecrypt_generic($td, file_get_contents("uncompressed.bfe")); mcrypt_generic_deinit($td); mcrypt_module_close($td); var_dump($plaintext); ?> Yet, this doesn't yield the plaintext. I little more exploring revealed that bcrypt will hide the key, so I commented that line out in the source to get to the bottom of it. I have had some success decrypting a different file from the same set- but I think the problem may have been when I transferred the file to the cluster filestore using WinSCP. Forcing WinSCP to use binary mode seems to have worked for one file so far, but I'll have to wait for the others to move across. Unfortunately, the only solution currently is to have more memory available. Bcrypt wasn't originally written with the expectation of being used for large files. Perhaps in a future version, it will be a bit less brain dead about such things. For the moment, I can only suggest a few courses of action: 1) Kill off all non-essential processes and hope it frees up enough memory to decrypt the file. 2) Add more memory to the machine (ugh) 3) Move the file to a machine with more memory for decryption. 4) Create a larger swap partition? Good luck. johnny Quoting Andrei <ma...@gm...>: > I have encrypted a large file (~900M) using bcrypt. The encryption > went fine, no error messages. > (Although it took some time. I have encrypted a large file (~900M) using bcrypt. The encryption went fine, no error messages. (Although it took some time. But that's OK) But when I am now trying to decrypt it, on the same machine, I am getting error ``cannot allocate enough memory''. What can I do? |

Hi, I need to decrypt about 300 files encrypted with bcrypt. How to make it work in a batch mode? I used it for 2 example files given at bcrypt.sourceforge.net and it worked OK when both of the file names were given in the command, but it didn't work with *.bfe Thank you. Best regards, Victor |

Hi Johnny, I thought I'd update you with progress in automating Bcrypt for PHP. I performed the following: 1. Installed Cygwin Unix Tools http://www.cygwin.com/ - PHP is running on a Windows server 2. On installation, specified 'bcrypt', 'cron' and 'expect' packages to be included 3. Created a shell script: #!/bin/bash # $filename - filename to encrypt # $password - password to use # ..... VAR=$(expect -c " spawn bcrypt -r $filename expect \"Encryption key:\" send \"$password\r\" expect \"Again:\" send \"$password\r\" ") echo "$VAR" # ..... 4. The PHP application runs independently of the Bcrypt shell script. PHP creates the file to be encrypted and places it in a secure directory on the Windows server (which is running PHP and Cygwin). Cygwin can access Windows filesystem (eg /cygdrive/c/windows) 5. A cronjob is setup to run at regular intervals to check to see if a file exists in the secure directory and then encrypts it using the Bcrypt shell script (above). It's not a beautiful solution but it has solved our problem ;) Regards Brett. |

Howdy, My memory is really rusty on this, but there is some header information on top of the data that specifies endianness and a few other things that you'd have to have. Also, you may need to pass some extra flags to mcrypt to force it to use the same blocksize etc. You'll need to dig through the source a bit and see all the steps that go into creating a file and follow them, or you'll never get the two methods to play nice. Glad you've been enjoying bcrypt. Someday perhaps we'll get a new version that incorporates everyone's feature requests. johnny Quoting Brett Scott <Bre...@gr...>: > Hello again. > > I've started looking into a different way to encrypt a file (blowfish) > and then send it to a server that uses bcrypt.exe to decrypt it, without > requiring bcrypt.exe to do the initial encryption. > > As the initial data is captured in a PHP script, we're looking at > encrypting the data in PHP, sending it to the remote server, where > bcrypt.exe is used to decrypt. > > The following PHP script failed to work. Hello again. I've started looking into a different way to encrypt a file (blowfish) and then send it to a server that uses bcrypt.exe to decrypt it, without requiring bcrypt.exe to do the initial encryption. As the initial data is captured in a PHP script, we're looking at encrypting the data in PHP, sending it to the remote server, where bcrypt.exe is used to decrypt. The following PHP script failed to work. Here is the steps I took. 1. Execute the below PHP script which will create the encrypted file 'test1.txt.bfe' with the contents '1234567890' based on the key 'eggheads'. 2. PHP script creates the blowfish encrypted file 'test1.txt.bfe' 3. Execute 'bcrypt test1.txt.bfe' (to unencrypt the file) 4. Enter the password 'eggheads' into the command line 5. Warning 'Invalid encryption key for file ...' message received <?php $key = 'eggheads'; $filename = 'test1.txt.bfe'; $string = '1234567890'; $iv = mcrypt_create_iv(mcrypt_get_iv_size(MCRYPT_BLOWFISH, MCRYPT_MODE_CBC), MCRYPT_RAND); $encrypted_string = mcrypt_encrypt(MCRYPT_BLOWFISH, $key, $string, MCRYPT_MODE_CBC, $iv); $fp = fopen($filename, 'w'); fwrite($fp, $encrypted_string); fclose($fp); // 1. To test decryption of file with bcrypt, execute 'bcrypt test1.txt.bfe' // 2. Prompted for password, enter 'eggheads' // 3. File 'test1.txt' will appear in file system ?> QUESTION. You may not have knowledge with PHP but is there something obvious I'm missing here? Is it something to do with the IV or MODE (CBC/ECB)? Thank you :) Brett. |

Hi Guys, We've been using bcrypt for a long time - it's very useful and extremely reliable for our needs. We're now trying to automate a few steps that we previously did by hand - one step involves encrypting/decrypting using bcrypt. Does anyone have a compiled version of bcrypt.exe that allows the password to be passed on the same command line as the file? eg. bcrypt.exe {filename} {password} Alternatively, will removing the second password prompt will assist in automating our bcrypt.exe file as we'll then be able to feed the password from a text file into the bcrypt.exe command line (I think). eg bcrypt.exe {filename} < password.txt I've tried to alter the source code and recompiling without any luck - using lcc (and making sure zlib.dll is present) but compiler fails on Make. Finally, we're also looking at moving this to a Linux environment. Is there a location where we can download bcrypt for linux? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks very much Brett. |

In response to Peter Nilsson, to install, COPY the .exe and the .dll from the zip to a directory e.g. C:\BCrypt. Somewhere in the instructions it notes that these two files need to be in the same location. With most versions of Windows and zip utilities, you can just drag the files out of the zip, or select all of the files and press the 'Extract' button. To use Bcrypt, open a DOS window (Start-Run type 'cmd' OK) and change to the new directory: cd c:\BCrypt. The prompt should change to C:\BCrypt> Now just type bcrypt filename or bcrypt path_to_file\filename To make things simple, just create a shortcut of the bcrypt.exe file from C:\Bcrypt or wherever you put it, on the desktop. You can then just drag files you want to encrypt or decrypt on top of the shortcut. Thats it. _________________________________________________________________ Making the world a better place one message at a time. http://www.imtalkathon.com/?source=EML_WLH_Talkathon_BetterPlace |

Hello. So how do I install? On 32 bits XP Pro I click the exe from the zip, there's a very short blackish flicker and that's all that happens. Could somebody advise me on this issue? Peter |
