SGI FAM is the: "FAM, the File Alteration Monitor, provides a daemon and an API which applications can use for notification of changes in specific files or directories." Packages that require fam (roughly speaking): gnome-vfs2 k3b kdbg kde* (kdeaddons, kdeadmin, kdeartworok .... kdeutils) koffice nautilus quanta (html editor for kde) Packages that require gnome-vfs2: devhelp eel2 gnome-desktop-devel gnome-python2-gnomevfs gtkhtml2 libgnome (and by extension all things gnome) libgnomeui (and by extension all things gnome) openoffice yelp Basically fam is used to provide change notification of files/etc, this is primarily used by GUI apps that have file browser components, thus if you leave the gui file browser app open to your home directory say it doesn't get out of date, i.e. if you delete or modify a file the GUI gets notified and updates. If you don't need KDE/Gnome you can toss it. If you use KDE/Gnome but are willing to live with out of date GUI file browser windows, toss it. If it's a user's desktop, that's probably the only time to keep it. Kurt Seifried, ku...@se... A15B BEE5 B391 B9AD B0EF AEB0 AD63 0B4E AD56 E574 http://seifried.org/security/ |
