Just to clarify, you can run 32-bit apps under a 64-bit kernel under OS X. For instance, I have Skype running on my 64-bit kernel Lion installation and that is only 32-bit right now. You can't run 32-bit Kernel Extensions on a 64-bit kernel, though. The reverse is also true: You can run 64-bit apps on a 32-bit Mac kernel (If you have a 64-bit processor).
