You can’t boot Lion into 32-bit mode, but you don’t have to. 64-bit Lion can run 32-bit i386 apps (but not PowerPC apps) just fine.

Don’t upgrade to Lion now. Mountain Lion is coming out in probably less than a month. It’s *much* improved, although I can’t disclose how or why because of NDA. But you should definitely upgrade to Mountain Lion rather than Lion.
