Normally, all windows have a back buffer managed by the CoreGraphics engine. You can turn this feature off, but this was buggy in older System revision (i.e. pre-10.1; I am not sure if it is exactly bug free in the current system version, though :) In many cases, you want the system to handle the back buffer, since it is quite well optimized and automates screen updates for you, but for games and emulators, this is not always desirable.
