./configure complains about no 'X'

When I run ./autogen.sh using the latest cvs source under Ubuntu Linux version 6.06 LTS, the last line states "checking for X... no", but I'm running X!
    Typing 'which X' returns '/usr/bin/X'
I've tried the CVS snapshot, as well, but it has the same problem.

What am I doing wrong?? I can attach the output of the autogen.sh if desired

Of course, now that I ask, I'll probably find the answer in about 2 minutes...

All right. I installed some packages, and now I don't get THAT error, but others still abound. First off, it would appear that Basilisk II is looking for an XF86 installation, but Kubuntu/Ubuntu uses X.org .

I am now getting a Syntax Error at line 6697 of configure
I would appreciate some help from the developer on this issue.
