Sounds great. Java 1.5 is the way to go. I'd also like to suggest not ruling out Jython.. If we could leverage some of the power of Python for certain classes, we could develop this alot faster and maybe even tap into some old PD C libraries not to mention the python modules. Just a thought :). I've fallen in love with Python recently. Very seductive language :) Also just wanted to let you know that I am available still. :) Jeff Barron On 2/22/06, allegroconmolto <all...@us...> wrote: > > I forgot to mention earlier two things: > > 1) I've made the executive decision that we are going to require Java 1.5= (Java 5), so that we can use some of the > 1.5 features. It looks functional to me, very clean. Something that could be grasped in 5 minutes of toying with it. IMO, This would be good for the first 3-4 roadmarks until we have time to spend on jazzing it up. I agree the Reason interface would be too complex. Where'd the sound effects go, though? allegroconmolto wrote: > Here's the previously-promised prototyping email :) > > In the past, we've talked about UI paradigms to imitate. Applications like Reason provide a toolbox of devices to play with and virtual "cables" to connect them together, and I initially thought that we would be wise to imitate that idiom. I still think it's a good idea. I also think it's too complex for our userbase and would be too complex to imitate. So, I've decided that for now, we're going to focus on getting something out the door - something that provides a free, open source, and functional alternative to some of the spendy-yet-crappy stuff in this area. I think I'm going to encourage that we just use the list for now until we have enough devs that it becomes too spammy for mail. (Won't that be the day.) To help heet out, I'll repaste his message here before responding: /--- Perhaps, an SDK could be added to the project in later releases to allow users to create their own devices? Apart from improving or customizing the default devices, it has little use, but what little use it has could be good enough. For instance, if someone wants to control a transmitter (Low Power FM, etc) or reciever (Scanner), having it inside the program could be useful. Such extensions would be highly hardware dependant, thus user development makes sense. Us using time on it does not. Would it be difficult to implement? /--- My response to that is two-fold. One, our software is open-source, and so I would expect that anyone who has significant contributions to make can just join up and develop for the greater good. Two, this is quite feasible, as I am expecting that each module will just develop as a subclass of a generic 'Module' class, and so adding new module types should be a easy process, esp. with access to the code for the other modules. To help out with this, I'll probably document how at least one of the modules was created, not only code-wise but also thought-process wise. That documentation would serve as our 'SDK' since the code is eminently open to anyone who feels like messing with it. allegroconmolto |
