You are using bash 3.1-0.06 which is over 2 years old and 3 releases
behind. Use 3.1-0.09 and I don't think you will have this problem.
There were recent changes for fixing set -u with bashdb-trace (which
you are not using here). So even better is to use what is in CVS.
