In the docs for the FileSet Resource, it lists the options for compression as being Compression = GZIP Compression = LZO Compression = ZSTD! Everytime it references ZSTD, it always has an exclamation point at the end. It appears someone might have been excited that ZSTD was added to the code, and the "!" was added to all references. I haven't dived into the code yet, to verify, but "ZSTD!" as a setting to "Compression =" results in an error of: 08-Jan 20:18 bacula-dir: ERROR in inc_conf.c:342 Config error: Expected a FileSet option keyword, got:ZSTD!: : line 11, col 28 of file /etc/bacula/filesets/server.conf Compression = ZSTD! When I set this variable to "Compression = ZSTD" (without the "!"), I get no complaints during job runs. -John -- - Adaptability -- Analytical --- Ideation ---- Input ----- Belief - ------------------------------------------------------------------- John M. Hi, I have stumbled across a case where the bacula manual is not up to date (or at least it seems that way). In every version of the Console and Operators Guide it specifies: >The maximum command line length is limited to 511 characters, so if you are scripting the console, you may need to take some care to limit the line length. This seems to be true for bacula 3.0.3, but already with version 5.2.12 (next version I could test) the character limit seems to be way higher. I failed to find any documented changes to the character limit in any manual. Now I'd be interested to know what the current character limit for the bconsole actually is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Kind regards Maximilian Gleißner IT-Department |

Hello Dan, Yes, thanks for the forwarded message. Ever since I divided the manual into multiple manuals, the links have been broken. This has been there for a very long time now. Bacula Systems just succeeded at correcting this problem (it was another Bacula System founder, not me) for the Enterprise manual version 6.2.x, which is supposed to be on bacula.org. So, this may be a reasonable temporary workaround for the community. Given the objectives I have for new features in Bacula before the end of the year, this will unfortunately be one of the items that suffers ... Hello, Yes, in my previous answer, I should have specified that I was referring to sqlite3. Sqlite 2 is not supported any more by the author as far as I know. For a large number of files per server (> 1 million) Sqlite3 is very slow compared to a properly tuned PostgreSQL. Can someone confirm? Yes, SQLite is no longer officially supported. We will leave the code in and ensure that it "works", but we recommend it for testing only. It is "use it at your own risk". Tip: For Enterprise Bacula, we highly recommend PostgreSQL. The upside is that it generally performs better than MySQL and is more stable. The downside is that out of the box, it is very poorly tuned for Bacula, and it needs more maintenance that MySQL. Those who are serious about Bacula should either find a good DBA or get the book "PostgreSQL 9.0 High Performance" (or its successor) as the book explains how to properly setup a PostgreSQL config file. The oldest PostgreSQL you should be running is 8.4. Both 9.0 and 9.1 are even better. > > I ask because the documents seem to indicate it is still supported. I have asked the poster for a reference to this claim. I should probably update the manual to be slightly more explicit. Best regards, Kern |

That said, is anyone really using sqlite3 for anything in production beyond a single server with a small number of files? James |

These issues arose from a post on Google+ NOTE: http://www.bacula.org/en/dev-manual/main/main/Current_State_Bacula.html says: Supports writing to DVD. There are other references to DVD too : http://bit.ly/RRFL2Q (google search) The same person mentioned that, according to a 2011 bug tracker entry, SQLite is no longer supported. Can someone confirm? We use the standard LaTex packages (there are a number of them -- nothing special). By the way, I was thinking about your Makefile problem, and I really don't understand it because I regularly build on FreeBSD 8.2. I build only Bacula Enterprise there, but Makefile especially in src/lib should be identical to what is in 5.2.x -- strange. Best regards, Kern |

I was just reading: http://www.bacula.org/5.2.x-manuals/en/developers/developers/Running_Regression_Script.html#SECTION001521000000000000000 Comparing this section: # Set your database here #WHICHDB="--with-sqlite=${SQLITE_DIR}" #WHICHDB="--with-sqlite3=${SQLITE3_DIR}" #WHICHDB="--with-mysql" WHICHDB="--with-postgresql" With what I see in the sample configuration file, I think a change is required. The above should be replaced with: # Set what backend to use "postresql" "mysql" or "sqlite3" DBTYPE="postgresql" # Set your database here #WHICHDB="--with-${DBTYPE}=${SQLITE3_DIR}" WHICHDB="--with-${DBTYPE}" The doc later mentions: # You may put your real host name here, but localhost is valid also # and it has the advantage that it works on a non-newtworked machine HOST="localhost" But the sample code contains: # You may put your real host name here, but localhost is valid also # and it has the advantage that it works on a non-newtworked machine HOST="127.0.0.1" NOTE: I think the above should be used, because 127.0.0.1 will always work, but localhost might not (IPv6 only installs not withstanding). NOTE: change non-newtworked to non-networked DISCLOSURE: I'd be doing these changes myself, but I've never been able to get a documentation development environment working. There are too many tools that I couldn't get to work. -- Dan Langille - http://langille.org/ |

What does this do with the data in the catalog??? Not used yet. Planned for future use. Disabled The status means that Bacula has no control over the reuse of the tape. When you want to reuse a Disabled volume you should first set its status to Used or Full and then purge all associated jobs. Does this mean that all data is kept in the catalog for ever??? I don't know the answer to the question -- I think the information is kept in the catalog, but you must read the code to know. Read-only The status can be set to make the volume read-only. Catalog data??? Reserved for future use. Meant to make the status read-only -- i.e. cannot write to the Volum. Busy ??? Not implemented. Probably cannot be implemented. The Cleaning cleaning the catalog ????. Not implemented -- I think. Meant to be used for a cleaning tape (i.e. you cannot write to it or read from it. When it is "mounted" it will clean the drive. Hi all, I am writing a piece about the volume status, but googleing around doesn't answer all my questions. I quick HTML document shows where information is missing. Can somebody fill in the question marks? Thanks, Dennis |
