Smbclient incrementals are based only on the mtime. So a deleted file, or a file modification that doesn't change the mtime (including renaming a file or unpacking files from a zip archive) will not be detected during an incremental. Rsync, in contrast, detects deleted files, new files, or any attribute change (eg: size, exist/delete, owner, modes, mtime) during an incremental. Long term I want to look into using the FileSys::SmbClient module instead of smbclient. This would give BackupPC direct access to the client files and directories, allowing it to compare all the attributes and file delete/create against the last full, which would give more accurate incrementals.
