I'm backing up several Windows machines with BackupPC 2.0.1beta0. All of these computers are on the same 100Mb network, although on separate subnets. I have tried SMB 2.0.8a, and am now trying out rsync using the rsyncd at the backuppc site and rsync 2.5.6 on my Linux box. It seems that my backups tend to average between 0.4 and 0.6 MB/s. Is this the type of speed I should expect? BackupPC is running on a 400MHz 128Mb machine with the storage space on a dedicate reiser filesystem. Watching top while backups are running seem to indicate that my system is CPU bound. Is it worth upgrading to a faster processor.. will 700Mhz make that much of a difference? I'd actually have to spend money to get something faster, and like everyone else, I'm trying to do this on the cheap. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
