Yes, i have backups who take much longer. Just reading in the german 
Linux Magazin 11/07 on page 87 that the right Scheduler could help. Try 
to activate the Deadline-Scheduler. It usually gives the highest IO-rate.

check with (for Example):

cat /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler

set with:

echo "deadline" > /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler
